Sid, fear not. There are still those of us out there (and I'm probably younger than you think) who do not use DAW applications and computers to do our processing.
Mic technique and outboard audio equipment are my predominant tools when sitting at the desk.
And yes, I do occasionally use reels. |

As a not-so old old fart myself, I too have hardware processing available, and prefer to use it when called for...I just don't have a limiter, hence my curiosity about it.
Man....tape....I cut my teeth (and fingers on occassion) splicing r2r.
And I just missed the days of film editing when I started in teevee lo those many decades ago!
Ah, the memories!....

Well, technically, I suppose both files have been monkeyed with to some degree. However, that first file looks like it has been normalized and that's about it. That isn't really "limiting" as much as it is just turning up the volume control to make the whole track as loud as it can be without altering its characteristics.
The second file has been run through what is sometimes called a "limiter" but the real processing that has been done is compression. The dynamic range has been squeezed to make the highs and lows much closer than they sounded in the original. It is not merely a case of making the whole piece a tad louder; its character has been fundamentally altered and it sounds dramatically different from the "natural" state in which it was initially recorded.
I have worked with producers who love that sound and 35 years ago, when I was a DJ on AM radio, I loved it too, mainly because it made my voice "boom" like it couldn't do in real life. But these days, as then, I think that heavy compression appeals mostly to control room geeks and not to "real people."

For the folks from home. A limiter is a compressor with a high compression ratio and a fast attack (that is, it kicks in really quickly).
For vocals, you'd normally have a 2:1 ratio at most. A limiter will usually be 10:1. A picture will probably explain things better.

I use a combination of EQ, Compression and Limiting....
Logic Channel EQ, Waves Rennaisance Compressor, and
Waves L1 Limiter set to VO Broadcast preset..
I occasionally use Logic Channel EQ, with Waves RennVox,
a sort of gate/compressor/limiter
There is another called PSP Vintage Warmer. a software plug in
that acts as sort of a multiband compressor limiter. It emulates
analog tube warmth, and when added to the master fader, adds
some "glue" to a fully produced spot..
I've been using these for a while now for tons of auditions and
gigs and have never heard anything to the contrary about the quality of my stuff. |
