| i don't have a computer but have access to one. i was looking for info re: what can you buy or use to send audition from voice123 to client or answer leads? the computer is from library so please pretend i know nothing cause i don't. any help would be appreciated. thanks. |

Mark, that's going to be a tough one. If you have the means to get your recording onto a CD and the PC has a CD drive, then you are probably in business. However, if you are relying on audio tape or something without any sort of interface to the PC, then the library's PC will have to have a sound card that accepts connections from an audio device (such as an RCA connection), or have a break-out box to the audio card which accepts such connections.
I suppose you could record onto an recorder and then connect via a 1/8" mini-plug to the PC's sound card. But the PC will have to have some sort of audio capture software on it (which can be the default Windows or Macintosh audio application). I have to tell you, though, I think that you won't be pleased with the results. You are certainly not going to be able to produce anything that is broadcast quality without an appropriate set up.
Good luck to you, but to be honest I don't think the library solution is going to work well for you. Sorry to be discouraging. |

Hi Mark,
It is possible to record your performance directly to a digital audio recorder, and then transfer the sound files to a computer for editing. There are some disadvantages as compared with a computer-based recording environment, but I suppose it would work in a pinch. I'm not a VO professional (yet) so I can't speak to the particulars of doing it this way for VO on a daily basis.
I have a Marantz PMD660 that accepts an XLR mic connection and saves uncompressed 48K WAV audio files to Compact Flash. You could plug a mic into it, do your reads, and connect it to your computer via USB, or take out the Compact Flash card and put it in a card reader, to download the files and edit them on the computer. This particular unit has a level meter--I think most models have some way to monitor the level--so you do have some control over the input.
Playback would be limited to the onboard speakers or headphones. Also, most of these portable digital recorders don't have an XLR input, a pro audio standard. This will force you to use an XLR to mini adapter or something similar, which will have an impact on the quality of your sound. In general, you'd be sacrificing the quality of dedicated components, for portability.
If you are still interested in doing it this way, I am selling my PMD660.

You can use a digital audio recorder with a USB interface; record using the gadget, then hook it up to the computer for editing / uploading. The only caveat would be you'd need some means of previewing and editing the file on the PC before uploading.
I use an M-Audio MicroTrack digital recorder, but when I get to the PC I still need to adjust levels, equalize, compress to mp3, etc. etc. That would imply the PC has a sound card, you have the ability/permission to install audio editing software on the PC and so on.
