Voicey!!!
You are much privileged for tag. Simply to make audition. Listening will be happy, top notch demos. Type keywords in quantities of three only.
Okay, here's the real English. When you submit an audition, you are placed in the "oh won't you tag demos" page. The term tag refers to code placed on a site that causes it to come up on searches (site wide in this case) if certain keywords are entered. Greg Hauser knows the real answer to this. I'm a computer dunce. But I think it's to enhance the search function here for folks who post demos but don't describe themselves. I'm not sure. I've never tagged, but you do listen to demos from other talents' home pages. I'm not sure if you are stopped if you actually enter keywords or not. I've listened to bits of 20 or so and then just closed the window.
Does this help? Guten Tag!!
added: Oh, and I have no idea when or where you can see anything that's been entered for you. I see nothing new on my page. |

Hi Melba
thanks for the "German proof explanation" (Oh dear, I think I will never get rid of that "Voicey" thing... LOL
OK, only when auditioning I will be presented with the taggy window - that's why I couldn't find it since German auditions happen to come in only 6 times a year... Hm, maybe V123 is willing to divide the premium subscription price by 6 as well
Herzlichen Dank und bis später,

You don't have to submit a demo to be able to tag. Just use this link:

I must repeat my question: a fairly obvious one, I think.
Will seekers actually USE these well screened and carefully crafted search terms/tags? Tagging google images is different. A dog is most evidently, well, a DOG. A voice? Warm, natural, friendly, professional, sexy -- you know, the ones we all use. Creative word play is fun, and may be more accurate, but the hits go to the common words, unless a seeker has an extensive vocabulary and likes using it along with an incredibly specific idea of the voice wanted.
Perhaps 123 should offer a multiple choice option from a list of commonly used search terms, with an "other" category for those that don't fit.
Just trying to help. _________________ Diane

I think Voice 123 should just go ahead and carry out their business model to the absolute lowest rung on the ladder and just charge $49 for an annual, premium subscription. Just go ahead and rip off the flood gates and let anyone and everyone come in and have full access to the sludge. This way, the serious talent can go ahead and leave, saving their money to invest in REAL marketing efforts that will truly result in an upward curve in their voiceover career, leaving the bottom-dwellers to enjoy the "amenities" here.
Come on, V123 - $49 for a year. Just think of the tens of thousands of voiceover talents you'd attract - and the hundreds of thousands in additional income you'd bring in. YAAAAAAYYYYYYYY!!!!!! |

Alluring.....now see that's not on my profile....hmmm should I put it there or just wait for someone to tag it as such?
The character demo is harder to tag.....I mean what if you have a character that is really rotten, rotten to the core, evil, and mean. If someone put down "rotten" it could be a compliment as to your acting skills or it could mean that they thought the demo it self "sucked".
I put down very nice tags for a demo I tagged but, I could help but put down "low bit rate". I just felt the talent should know. It was great demo besides the the bit rate. |

They don't allow you to tag your own demos, Deby. That's just what they're trying to avoid. _________________ Diane

Okay a few things here.
1) that link only works for folks if they're signed in a premium members. Frankly the security to that page is weak, so if you know how to spoof the authentication mechanism (it's easy, but I'm not showing you how... I rather enjoy not having to explain that one to my employers), you can get in.
/don't worry... I didn't spy on the page. Just noticed the vulnerability.
2) for not being readily available, a lot of new tags are showing up for this site when I use the major search engines. At first I noticed V123 was saying that you couldn't see them. I noticed that claim has quickly vanished.
3) Houser, not Hauser. Ancestors changed it after the American Revolution (apparently the natives has a thing against Hessians at the time... go figure ). No biggie.
4) IF a seeker uses the search engine to these tags will show up. If V123 decides to use strong DAC (Discretionary Access Controls) coupled with a labeling schema in the database they can keep this info off of the net. Either their current schema is faulty or they never intended to keep it internal.
BTW: there are a few documents out there that are quite amusing (that are V123 sponsored). My personal fav at the moment is this http://voice123.com/webminar2p.ppt . I won't post the internal documents I've found (again, you need to do your own treasure hunt for those).
/bonus points for putting your phone number on there
//BTW: expected return per audition is $2.85?
///multiple OPSEC failures in presentation... be thankful I'm not a stalker
////learn the slashies, live the slashies, love the slashies
/////Want to know where a lot of the lowballing comes from? http://voice123.com/doc/prices.html ($350 for a national?) |

There's no point in tagging a demo "low bit rate." Tags are not critiques or helpful hints aimed at the voice talents. They are terms designed to be found by search engines. No voice seeker is ever going to come to Voice123, open up the "Search Talent Database" feature and request a voice talent who offers "low bit rate." They may put in some keywords like "warm," or "sophisticated," or "agressive," or some other attribute that they are looking for, but not that -- and probably not anything negative, for that matter. _________________ For more voice over demos, my life story, and other foolishness, please visit my website at www.leegordonproductions.com |

They don't have us tagging our individual demos but Voice123 certainly does allow us to "tag" our profiles. Any descriptive terminology we include under "Voice Description," "Voice Genders and 'Ages' I Can Perform," "Accents and Dialects," "Additional Skills," etc. are, for all intents and purposes, tags.
I believe the whole point of tagging is to allow a fresh set of ears to augment what we have said about ourselves with a term or two we may not have thought of. _________________ For more voice over demos, my life story, and other foolishness, please visit my website at www.leegordonproductions.com |

"Talents will have control to remove tags soon enough, yet I think you would be missing out on a great opportunity to be found much easier. If you wish to skip the process, you may be putting a restriction on how well you can be found. "
From Steven's e-mail, in the future it may be more important than you think, Lee. _________________ Diane

I think what Steven was trying to say is that not adopting the tags people have "contributed" to us will limit our ability to be found in a search vs. keeping those tag. I don't think Voice123 is planning to penalize people for not having tags. Sometimes I think the people at Voice123 who are responsible for communicating with the membership create headaches for themselves through their own lack of a "way with words." _________________ For more voice over demos, my life story, and other foolishness, please visit my website at www.leegordonproductions.com |

Yikes - you are so right - anyone who is new to the business will be flumoxed and misinformed. (Agent/Ad Agency).
It relates to what Lee was saying about their "way with words." The whole site reflects a lack of a copy editor with a dash of English as a second language. I remember early "conversations" with customer support that included a lot of back and forth just focused on understanding each other. Lately the people running tech support get what you are saying, but due to the complex nature of what they are trying to do with the site, it is still hard to figure out if they heard your concerns. _________________ Connie Terwilliger - New Yorker Cartoon

John,
Indeed, it was Keen's book that inspired this post. In fact, the "Drudge" line is a direct quote. After reading your thoughts, I realized that I should have given more attribution to Mr. Keen.
Thanks for expanding the story about the Frito Lay experiment.
Interestingly, my journalist daughter (and currently University of Washington law student) dislikes Keen's premise. It's interesting to experience firsthand these generational/technological issues.
May you live in interesting times." Isn't that an ancient curse? _________________ www.voiceover1.com |
