I've always liked AKG 414s but I never wanted to pay for that mic as a multipatterned condenser. Now they've come out with a cardioid only "budget-friendly" mic that uses the same capsule. It looks like it's going to sell for about $650.

Sweetwater has 'em for $599...Looks like a good product for anyone who likes the 414. $599 is a nice price. The 414 is one of those love it/hate it mics. There's no in-between. It either sounds very good or it sounds absolutely terrible on a given voice. I love AKG products...I think they're built very well and I think a great deal of research goes into creating them. But I hate their mics on my voice.

Given that most VO people only need cardioid, I expect this will be a hit in the community.

We'll see.

This is going to be a mic that is 414'ish, but should sound a bit different than the original article. The capsule and I believe the element are "based on" the original, not the original. Depending on how they go about things it might sound better, the same, or worse for VO.

I'm reserving judgment until there's on in front of me. Very Happy
