After 15 years in radio, doing some v-o on the side, I recently took the plunge to focus full-time on my v-o and production business. Thanks to everyone who posts here... I've already learned quite a bit from perusing the archives.

(Probably should've posted here before posting my demo in the critiques section, sorry.)

Honestly, I'm still trying to figure that out. Coming from radio - radio imaging more specifically - a lot of my background is kinda hard-sell oriented. Currently working on a narration demo. I think my strongest reads right now are my enthusiastic, younger-sounding ones. Definitely a work in progress, but I've already learned quite a bit from checking out the archives here!

Mr Rice,

I have done a limited amount of radio and TV imaging -- but none of the elborately produced stuff.
Things like "The blackout of '03 - continuing coverage...."
"alternative medicine -- does it work? Tonight at 6 and 11." etc.

They'll tell you broadcasters must forget everything they know as a broadcaster to make it in voiceover --
Some will even tell you it's impossible -- but It isn't.
You do have to re-learn quite a few things

voiceover standards are mich higher than broadcast -- and there are 100-men and women who want to compete with you before you get to utter a word.

It's very challenging but it can be very rewarding.
Make sure your home recording system is competative.

best of luck

Welcome aboard Chris Rice!!

Radio imaging/ Radio period is a completely different animal than VO work by today's standards. You have excellent production skills and an awesome hard sell for radio imaging. Today's VO artists are actors first and foremost before they are the guy or gal with a nice set of pipes. I'm experiencing a similar situation as you. Lots of habits to "unlearn" and new habits to incorporate with VO. Yes, it can be done and I think you have the talent to experience the whole pie.

Good Luck!

~Allison~

Thanks Allison! Yes, "voice actor" was a term I'd never heard until a couple of months ago, when I started checking out this forum and a couple of others. One thing that I think will make the transition a little easier for me is the fact that a lot of the imaging I do has little characters and bits in it, so the concept of acting and playing different roles is somewhat familiar to me. But I also realize I've got a LOT to learn and a LOT of work to do to get where I want to be, and having resources like this board are a big help.

Thanks again!
