I have a musician friend who is in the market for new mics for his rock band's vocalists. You know, one of those tiny club gig bands.
Any suggestions from those with experience?

The 58 is the club gig mic of choice. No doubt.
You can use it as a hammer and it still holds up fine. I have seen those things take such beatings and still hold up for years. 100 bucks anywhere.

I actually prefer the 57 on many vocalists and it is extremely common as well.
I also really like the Beta 58. It costs a bit more and is less common, but it has a tighter pattern and really sounds nice. Sennheiser also makes some great sounding handhelds.

Audix OM5. If you have never used one live, you don't know what you are missing. Incredible vocal reproduction. I have been using one since 1993.

No doubt.....hands down, the Shure SM 58 and/or the Beta 58's are some of the best (the Beta 58's definitely 'hotter.') I used one or the other of these mics for many years in live gigs and they rock!!
Neumann also makes some incredible mics for live performance but I'm not sure I'd recommend investing that kind of money for mics in a club or similar environment where they'd be exposed to smoke, sweat, alcohol, blood and possibly even other unmentionable things.
