By now we've all noticed the new V123 designation "I have ISDN in my studio."

After some thought, I believe this is still a loophole for those who DON'T actually have ISDN in their OWN studio.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts. Does "my studio" mean "the studio down the street" or does it mean "MY" studio . . . the one I own? The one to which I have immediate access as compared to a radio station at which I'm only there for certain limited hours, etc.?

Should degrees of access be more defined? I must say that as a seeker, I would feel misled if someone said they had ISDN in "their" studio and they really didn't.

You're absolutely right, Allen

Code:
this is still a loophole for those who DON'T actually have ISDN in their OWN studio

...and for all those who don't have an ISDN audio codec (or as we say here: ISDN audio link), but ISDN internet connection, or a fritz card, or leonardo, or ADSL (as read on a colleagues personal site:"I have my own ADSL studio").

I believe ISDN in "my" studio means in my studio. No loopholes now, you either have it or you don't. I added a note on my page that says I have complete access to ISDN nearby. I think that explains it ok.

That's the way I see it, too, Kara. I hope others see it that way and don't mislead seekers by fudging on the definition of "my studio."

I have a Zephyr sitting in my rack but no lines installed. I guess that counts just as much as a studio "down the street". Twisted Evil

And of course I'm kidding there. Just making a point.

I couldn't agree more, Kara and Allen - yet I think the problem is not a possible misunderstanding of the word "my", but the meaning of "having ISDN" in general. Recent example: A VO talent on the board asks for help setting up a USB microphone... Checking his listing I've found to following:

Quote:
My Recording and Delivery Capabilities
• I will go to any designated studio in my area
• I have ISDN in my studio
• I have Phone Patch in my studio
• I have Source Connect in my studio
• I can record and then deliver the audio files via Email
• I can record and then upload the audio files via FTP
• I can record and then deliver the files by regular mail

...while on the studio equipment list I could find a USB microphone and a freeware soundrecording software only...

Thomas,

I agree that when the term "my studio" is applied, it's equivocation to say you have ISDN -- when it's actually at a studio you have access to -- but which is not in your constant possession. I was glad to have the clarification added on the profile settings, since, like Kara, I have ready access to one, but don't have it in my home office/studio. I require one day notice on booking, though, because I think that's reasonable. There are no emergency VO needs except where somebody dropped the ball and didn't finish their production in time. And that's not my problem. Laughing

I noticed the pleas for help and the profile "promises" which you note in your excerpt above. If that's the individual I'm thinking of, I was disheartened to think the casting may have taken place via v123. If an agent or engineer has one bad experience with the audio delivered from a talent booked here, then I think it's unlikely for subsequent leads to be posted here by that agent. The free-for-all page posting policy of v123 has been grating on me lately as it is. If folks would just be honest and non-delusional it would help, I guess. Laughing

I just naturally assumed that ISDN stood for Individual Style of Doing Narration. Most of us should have this.

Ya know, I think some of the people who have nothing more than a Labtec mic and a copy of Audacity but who have indicated they have ISDN, Phone Patch, Source Connect, etc. are not being deceitful. It's just that they are such newbies that they didn't understand the question so they ticked the box they thought was the "correct" answer.
On the other hand, some people are just full of crap.

Holy Crow, I just looked under one of my Auralex panels and found out that I've got ISDN in my studio too! Who knew???

I'm going to go looking for a U47 in a field of clover now...

My understanding is as Kara's. I did not check the box for ISDN because I do not have ISDN in my studio --but somwhere in my profile I state that I have access to ISDN with 24 hour notice. Hopefully that's clear enough for voice seekers.

I just shake my head at some of the intentional misleadings in profiles. Sure, it makes somebody look good-- if, IF, they're not caught. To me, that makes them just dishonest. Maybe I'm closed minded but I cannot tolerate dishonesty.

Well if we're all so dead set on total honesty, then shouldn't there be a box to check that says

"waiter/ waitress pretending to be a voiceover"

hmmm?

and types of recordings offered should read

"WHile I've never really done anything aside from some answering machine recordings for my brother-in-law, I certainly think I'd like to take a crack at books, voicemail, commercials, characters, imaging and anyhting else whether or not I may actually even be familiar with the term." Oh and what the hell, jingles too (do you have to be able to know music or sing for that?)
