Cameron,

I don't have a 'disable' option for my audio through my control panel.
I did just try 'no speakers' and that didn't work either.

I called the store where I purchase my Fast Track and asked if I could bring it in and hook it up to their system. They are allowing me to do so, but seemed hesitant for some reason. Of course I am about two weeks pass my one year warranty date. All roads seem to be leading to the device. If it is bad....not sure I want to sink more money into an M-Audio product. This product did what I needed in price range I can handle. Any suggestions on what to do if the device is bad? Think there is any chance I can get them to extend me a courtesy on the warranty since I am within a few weeks of the date?

Hmm, maybe I misspoke...Control Panel>System>Hardware tab>Device Manager>list of devices...just go Sound and right click on the audio card.

After that, I'm not sure what it could be but hopefully the store can help out.

Good luck,
Cameron

Heather something has changed, either physically like a drop/hard bump/ mic trauma or something in the software geography/ settings…

The M-audio tech answer makes no sense—sounds like something out of a cust serv answer binder—now the thing is to try to trace back to what it is that has changed between the last time it was working fine and the time that you noticed the hum.

Have you installed / removed any programs that might have automatically altered the audio settings?

Also sounds like your system has two audio controllers that have switched enabling/ disabling functions. Look in your add/remove window and see how many are installed.

If I were at this point and absolutely had no other recording recourse I would probably just reformat to default settings and begin anew--particularly if your recording pc is connected to the Internet for various reasons.

Cameron,

I found it! But sad to say that didn't change anything....

Andy,

The only thing I have done is a typical virus scan, or windows update.
Nothing else has changed which is what is making this so frustrating.
The Fast Track device sits on my desk and doesn't move. The cord length doesn't really allow it to fall of or anything. So, I don't know how it could be damaged in anyway....

I have now been on hold with M-audio for over twenty minutes! kopf gegen wand

Well the verdict is in.....yes indeed is was/is the Fast Track. The guy at the store I bought it from tested it. Then he started shaking it and wiggle the USB cord and that was it. The socket were the USB cord plugs in to the device is loose.
Thank for ALL your help everyone in trying to solve the mystery of the hiss.
I now need a new interface!

Heather, my dearest darling, you should have called me in the first place: Fast Track has given me nothing but trouble. Ah! There's the rub!

Much relieved that you found the issue.

Loose usb hubs is not uncommon in devices.

You should be able to just tighten it up with a mini screw driver.

Cira.....NOW you tell me! Laughing Maybe we should have a mutual Fast Track smashing party!! Cocktails and hammers! Laughing
So what are you using for an interface deary?

Andy,

Until I can replace this horrid device..... let's talk about how I tighten up the plug in. I am assuming I need to take off the top? Then should I find screws inside that hold the plug in place?

Heather, it will probably be a threaded washer that needs to be re-screwed around the USB hub cylinder/casing to hold it in place.

Be careful as you remove the cover not to yank any of the tiny wires.

The good news is that the washer is probably what you hear rattling on the inside.

Before removing the cover try to localize it to the end of the device by moving it around in much the same way we used to shake cereal boxes to shift the goodie prize near to the opening.

It will probably be a version of this thing or if not, it will probably be just a tiny screw:

I hope this works for you
