I just picked up an HP laptop and loaded up Cool Edit Pro....it worked, for a while. Now I get an error message when it loads.

Anybody have any luck hanging onto Cool Edit Pro with Vista? Or is this a lost cause?

Cameron

I've got Vista, but I'm running Audition 1.0 so results may differ.

I had the same problem. Audition wouldn't run at all. For me, it was the DEP (Data Execution Prevention), which, get this, stops .exe files from running. You have to get into it from control panel and simply add it to the list of allowable programs.

Now, not sure if you'll have problems with this as well, but I couldn't get the record function to work. I went in and looked and Vista had disabled my soundcard to record. Not sure why. So I had to enable it and it works fine now.

Lucas,

Thanks for the info. How do you check the allowable programs--which function from the Control Panel?

I'm stumped. The message error I get is "This system has not been configured correctly to run Cool Edit Pro. Please run Setup again"

I've uninstalled and reinstalled half a dozen times and same thing. There's got to be a setting somewhere because it worked when I first installed it. I even downloaded an ASIO driver that supposedly helps--nope.

I'm afraid another $300 will be dropped soon for Audition 3. I'm really trying to avoid that

I'm actually not at home right now, but I can check for you later on. Although if you just search for DEP it should bring it up. It's somewhere in... settings or... something.

Don't buy the new ver. There should be a way to fix this. Vista is touchy as hell, but it can work.

Good and bad news now. I had a few upgrade patches I had on disk that I forgot to upload and that seems to have done the trick!

The bad part is, the Sound Blaster external card I successfully installed before isn't working now.

I knew it was going to be a nightmare with Vista--my headache is throbbing now.

Thanks for your help Lucas.

Cheers,
Cameron

Ha ok now we're beyond my area of expertise.

I'm sure you'll find the help you need though.

I'm thinking of downgrading back to XP. The best part is, it would work lol. Also, since Vista takes so much to run, my system runing only XP would be lightning fast. Well Vista hasn't been that bad for me, but XP I think is still better.

Talk soon.

Yep, I'm going to miss XP a lot.

Thanks again for checking in Lucas...I really appreciate it. I just downloaded some Vista drivers for the SB card so my fingers (and toes) are crossed.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Cheers,
Cameron

ASIO was not supported until Audition 2.0. Before that, Audition and Cool Edit used WDM drivers. So an ASIO driver would provide no benefit whatsoever, unless it was wrapped in WDM.

AA 3.0 is, in my opinion, well worth the cost. It's a huge step up and is the only version supported under Vista.

Emmit,

I was just about to pull the trigger on downloading AA but I remembered a few upgrade patches I had saved for CE. I popped them on there and it worked! I am beside myself that it did.

Once it was back up and running, my external sound card stopped working. So a Vista driver later, that is back up and running as well.

I'm elated to say that test runs have been successful, but I'm still "cautiously optimistic" that it will continue. Vista seems pretty sketchy and I'm just wondering when it will all fall apart in the middle of a recording.

If that happens, ok, I'll break down and get AA.

I appreciate you checking in Emmit.

A Cautious Cheers,
Cameron

Glad it's working! From what I've heard of unsupported versions, sometimes it works, sometimes not. I've heard that some people cannot get it to install at all, some can't get it to run and some have missing features. Direct X plugins seem to have a problem and there have been some other small issues as well. For the most part, those that can get it going don't seem to have many problems, except for some missing features here and there.

Hi Cameron

I use Vista and Cool Edit Pro with no problems so it can be done! I tried Cubase and couldn't get that to work though.

Jenna,

That's good to hear. So far, it's been working for me too. I just don't know how tempermental Vista is so I wonder how long it will last.

Thanks for checking in.

Cheers,
Cameron
