Does anyone use the high-end pre-amps or voice processors? I'm using the Symetrix 528e with a Neumann TLM 103, and it works just fine; however, I've been told that the Avalon line of products will improve the sound, so I'd like to hear from someone who has used both, if possible. Geez, the Avalon is a couple of grand...and the Symetrix was one-fourth of that. Will the Avalon sound four times better?

Thanks everyone.

Russ McLamb is an Avalon M5 user. Heeelloooo....Ruuuussss?

I'd love to try out an Avalon or a John Hardy M1 Personal (which is slightly less $$ than the Avalon). But until then, I'll stick with my Studio Projects VTB-1.

Bill,

I used the Symetrix for a couple of years when I first started out. It's a great box, but the Avalon M5 has a fuller sound. It's full and clean. The M5 is just a preamp. Is it "better" than the Symetrix? That's something only you can decide. For me and my voice, yeah it was and it was worth it. You can pick up a used M5 for around $1000. The Avalon channel strip has mixed reviews when it comes to VO. Some like it, some hate it. Plus the Channel strip is tube where the M5 is not. The main thing I've heard from bigger production houses is they want it clean. So the advice I was given thats been proven right so far is keep it clean. A clean pre like the M5, the Hardy M1 , or Great River will do ya well.

Russ
