Well, my feeling is no matter whether a gig is union or nonunion, always ask for union rates. For a promo, that would be:

$227 for the body of the promo
$93 per tag.

Promos can have a number of tags at either the top or the bottom (or both) of the promo.

Here's a breakdown example:

Tag 1: "Next week on The People Show"
Tag 2: "Coming up next on The People Show"
Tag 3: "Thursday, on The People Show"

Body: "The people of The People Show talk to other people about being people. What will the people say about the people?? Find out....."

Tag 1: "Next week on The People Show"
Tag 2: "Next, on The People Show"
Tag 3: "Next, followed by an all new Dating for Dollars"
Tag 4: "Thursday. on an all new The People Show"

OK-so here we have a promo consisting of the body and 7 tags. At union rates this would add up to $878 per session. Now, not every session will have this many tags. Some may have more. Some less. But when negotiating figure the tags into your rate.

Hi September.

I'm with Bob on this one. This is a perfect example of a job that fits the tag / body rate schedule. This is most likely national cable network TV.

I would bid at or close to those rates. If they like your audition, they can always get back with you on the rates. Keep in mind, that you rarely can negoiate up so don't bid too low.

By the way, you would be perfect for this read...Go for it.

From a career management point of view I would sugest bidding high as this gig, in the long term, is likely to close more doors than it will open.

'tis the nature of the funny old world we live in.

Hey Philip!

Just curious how this gig would close doors. I've never had a job close doors. On the contrary. Every gig I've ever had opened doors.

May have misread the content but it appears to be promo's for an adult/erotic channel. If that's the case (I'm not taking the moral high ground here) then there is strong anecdotal evidence from artists in the USA and UK that involvement with such channels tends to stem the flow of other quality work and therefore career growth.

I and others who have noticed this may be wrong but there is scant or little contradictory evidence.

Walking away from certain jobs is like pushing your mother-in-law off a cliff in your new car. There's a short term cost but a long term gain.

If people manage their careers wisely then the experience should be as yours, every door leads to another open door.

Gotcha. Yeah, I just re-read the breakdown.

I look at it this way. Morality choices aside, there are no credits on promos. If this pays scale, as the promo branding voice for a network you'll get between 500 grand to a million a year. For that kind of money I'll close the other doors myself. Heck, I'll lock em!!!

Bottom line is, there are no credits on a promo. Unless the actor promotes doing the gig, no one will know. Especially if the read is with a very specific "attitude" that won't be used for, say, Lifetime.

So again, unless it's a morality issue, I say go for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agreed. I don't have a problem with the job as such. This is business so it has to make financial sense and the numbers need to be up in the region you've quoted, my guess is that they will be nowhere near.

My current promo voice jobs include CNN, The Business Channel, Zone Horror and Naked Nuns at Night HD

If every voice actor associated with the online services would stop taking pennies for their services, it would go a long way to helping all of us. The rate that Mr. Bergen has suggested is completely reasonable. Producers are saving Agent's fee and HR...thus they are already getting a deal at the rate Mr. Bergen presented...educating the client to that end may be helpful as well.

You can always look like the "hero" by dropping the rate a bit if you feel inclinded, however you will be hard pressed to get them to go the other way once you offer to accept some devalued rate.

I'm for keeping rates no less than 20% below union rates...I say that because virtually all the folks who seek talent online are expecting to pay less than union rates (per my experience).

Philip does bring up an interesting point. I want to do animation, I dream of being in a Disney Film either acting or singing or BOTH! A film that is then turned into a TV show would be great. I could have job security. total breit
Now I'm a pretty wholesome gal with a somewhat naturally sexy voice. I think my novelty store animation job was cute and harmless. However...I'm not sure I made the right decision when I posted it in the Got the Gig section. Is experience more important than image. I know that Robin Williams has told some pretty dirty jokes... and yet was cast in Aladdin. Ofcourse....He was already famous from Mork from York. Should I have just kept that gig to myself????

I think it's a case of "Who got THE gig" as opposed to who got any old gig. Getting a job is not noteworthy in itself so before leading the parade one has to ask if this is a WOW factor gig. Why is any gig really worth mentioning apart from the person's own feel good factor?

Career management is about making the right choices and seeing yourself in the right perspective. If Robin Williams does something then the world is watching, if Philip Banks does something then within reason, no one cares.

In the Deby's case, few people if any will know about the novelty store job so there's no need to break out into a sweat over it.
