I always get nervous when I work for a new client, particularly one without an "established" look on a website ("coming soon" does not inspire confidence.) All I wonder is if a) anyone has recorded a book for them, and b) did you get paid (in full, in a reasonable amount of time)?

Let me be clear I have absolutely no reason to doubt this particular client. I just can't afford to do a long job and hope for the best.

I appreciate your help. Hopefully, I'll get your back some day.

Excellent reply, Maggie.

I'd like to add some additional thoughts relative to this type of dilemma.

Payment terms are a privilege, not a right. If your client is someone you haven't had business with in the past, it's good business to have them complete a short credit application and agreement. The credit application does not necessarily have to be used to offer Net 30 credit terms, but can merely allow for many types of payment agreements including a 50/50 deposit/balance agreement. It's more likely that the client will give you a better idea of the company structure with this document. You may be a "coming soon" website, however, it could be an offshoot of a larger more established company....or maybe not.

Now, you may not choose to investigate a client's credit....sometimes you may (Knowx.com...etc) What you have though, is the information required to properly collect as well as properly report deficient credit activity. Many collection agencies will take on a collection account for free and take a percentage when monies are collected. They can also be hired to report deficient credit activity on a fee basis.

You also can use this form to properly acquire PERMISSION to inquire about their payment history for credit purposes of extending credit.

Voice Acting is your business, even for those who do it part time. If anyone needs a copy of a standard credit agreement, please let me know.

Again, I appreciate the professional and thorough advice. I will take it to heart. I have secured a downpayment and am ready to move forward with this client. I wish you both (all) continued luck.
