Great post JS. I agree completely on your assessment of ISDN as to why it will linger for a while. The capital investment is a huge factor.

Phone patch is a great buddy (and buddies with ISDN are an even better buddy). I've kept many of my Boston clients via phone patch alone after relocating to Atlanta.

When I first put in my studio four years ago, having been Creative Director of two major production houses previously and owning a studio in one of their buildings until the firm moved to the West coast, I immediately thought I needed ISDN in my in-home studio because I was used to having ISDN. My son, a professional audio engineer in New York City, dissuaded me from it. He told me that private studios like mine, one owner in-home studios or smaller studios do not need ISDN unless they get a client, or more than one, who demands it. Otherwise, it is a needless expense. I, like my son, simply put the client on a speaker phone next to our recording station where the voice talent speaks into the mic. The people on the phone can hear just as clearly as if they were in the room and we can hear them when they speak to us. We gently tell them please to be quiet when we say "quiet please." That suffices. It works beautifully. By the by, I still have not had a client insist on ISDN!!! And if they did, there are at least ten studios I could rent in Dallas where I live that have it. The client would pay the bill, however...
