Hoo boy. This is the problem with consensus by committee.
Ask 20 different people and you'll get 20 different opinions.
I have my own, but they'll just muddy up the waters even more.
I have, instead, questions, that may be more productive in steering you towards your final product:
- are you creating these designs yourself, or working with a designer/graphic artist? If you are artistically inclined and can do this, great. If not, you do yourself the same disservice that a client does when he chooses to voice his own spot instead of hiring a pro (you). If you're NOT working with a graphic artist, consider one. Nikki Saco is astoundingly talented.
- What images/messages/colors/moods reflect YOU?! Is it legs, leaves, kittens, acid rock, waterfalls? What image, at a glance, would tell someone what they're getting from you? I may not be a marketing genius, but I ended up with the puppy dog because I'd like someone to think they get a warm, fuzzy read from me.
When I first posted my redesign here many, many months ago, I became more and more confused as many well-intentioned thoughts were offered. I finally listened to one person, my voice coach, who helped immensely in pointing me towards what I think works well for me.
If you want my thoughts on this, 'Ember, p.m. me, but I really don't want to add to the boiling cauldron of increasingly complex analysis here. YOU need to decide what works for YOU.

That's a beautiful image. Nicely done.

I like the first one alot (notsomuch the second one for a number of reasons), but without the mic, and then I'd move the site address down and maybe to the right? I dunno, I'd have to see it.
Also, I forgot to mention this before, I'd put my contact info like phone, email and even ISDN numbers if you have them (so they know you have ISDN... but that's optional) somewhere. Maybe not on the front cover... but maybe the back, or inside? |
Once you have representation you don't want your personal contact info on your demo. Let them negotiate with your agent. Your website address will get them to you if they need to get to you directly. |
I sincerely mean no disrespect here... isn't this the point of the demo to get representation? Perhaps I misunderstood the reason 'Ember's doing this.

Actually Caryn, that's a great question.
A demo "demonstrates" your VO skills. One person who needs to hear these skills would be a perspective agent. Once you've secured representation you need to market your demo to buyers, such as ad executives, producers, casting directors, toy companies, television networks, radio program directors, publishers, film sound editors, etc.
I myself haven't sent out a hard copy CD for about 5 years. Almost all marketing is done electronically. You still need handful of demos, JUST in case a buyer prefers a hard copy CD rather than an MP3. And your agent will ask for a handful. But they rarely us em. Voicebank and agent's websites are most commonly used to market their talent.
Most agents these days prefer an MP3 when submitting for representation. They put CDs in a big ol box and will get to them....uh, eventually. But all agents sit at their computer throughout the day. They open their emails as they get them. They are able to listen to a demo immediately. Granted, most will only give you a 5-10 second listen.
The CD packaging of a demo isn't as important these days as they were even 5 years ago. But a good website is vital! This is where most VO marketing is done. In the old days (from the start of my career to about 5 years ago) I would send out about 6000 CDs a year. These days every email has my website in my signature. Plus, I'm constantly sending out ecards, contacting ad execs via email, etc., to market my VO career.
Since September has been so successful in securing agents, she now needs to market to the buyers these agents work with. My advice is for September to talk to her agents, find out if they prefer clients to market via hard copy CDs or electronically. Some agents will do an email blast of their client's demos to market them to their buyers. Some agents supply their actors with contact info, be it e-mail addresses or snail mail. One of the advantages of having an agent is being able to market to their buyer contact list. So it's now that the real marketing work begins. Having an agent opens a slew of doors! But getting an agent is a bitch. Which is why September deserves such a HUGE and loud kudos!!!!! But she's also quite talented. And those who have the "it" factor usually get agents.

Just my .02 here...
The URL font should always be easily intelligible. I'd stick with a simple font like Arial, Sans Serif, Garamond, etc.

Thanks for the great reply Bob!!! Very insightful. I now understand why you said what you did about the contact info. Makes sense.
I do alot of what you suggest re: marketing. But I suppose I should inquire to my agents about marketing to their buyers and how they do that.
Sorry for the threadjack, 'Ember.

I really, really like what David offered.
I would suggest a couple of things for your consideration.
1) The URL to your website should be in a different font, something like Geneva, Arial or Verdana. That is business like, which actually provides a very nice contrast to a very attractive, very artistic design. (David - Nice Job!)
2) I would recomend using the name "September Day". I offer that suggestion for a couple of reasons. First, it evokes a very pleasant mental image. After all, our image is a very important part of our marketing. The second is for privacy reasons. Anyone who needs to reach September Day - the voiceover - for legitimate business purposes can easily do so using the supplied website information. Anyone wanting to hassle Ms Leach - the woman - for nefarious purposes will find it a bit more difficult, which provide you with a little insulation and increased personal security. Yes, it is a shame we must think of such things, but the truth is that we must.

as the saying goes "KISS"...
September, you have a name that you can run with!
The autumn leaves in the backround is always an eye catching idea, but for the acutual font: I'd use the "...dot.com" in a bold arial font that stands out in front of the leaves. Your actual name can be in script, just make sure it's legible and can be read over the backround.
That's just my opinion, but it doesn't mean anything. I'm only telling you what my eyes would want to see first.
Good Luck with what you decide. You are a very talented VO artist and I continue to wish you the best.
~Ally~
