Got this interesting e-mail yesterday:

"Hi Scott,

At long last we have some scripts ready for recording for the ------- project. These are the first four scripts. AIF format will work fine if you have that. Let us know if you have any questions or notice anything. Please copy ------- ---------- on all emails/questions.

Also, what do you think your timing is for this?

Thanks much, ------"

Now I was utterly clueless who this was or what the project was. So I e-mailed and left a voicemail saying "I'd LOVE to work with you, but, um, could we talk and refresh my memory?"

I spoke to the client today and apparently this was from an audition sent in probably back in May or so! I'm not even sure if it came from V123 or another site! I apologized to the client for having no idea, but he totally understood. Thank goodness he still had my demo that he sent BACK to me so I could hear the delivery pacing and style, plus he quoted my rate back to me. BTW, it's a nice sized job. So a very nice surprise to say the least. And as we're learning here, never give up hope. You just never know when these things may come back to life.

I'll attach the original audition.

Scott --
That is great news to share. Congrats and keep on going! It is true even when you think your efforts are wasted on some of these auditions, you just never know where or when it may belatedly reward you. We just don't know what's going on behind the curtain in our Emerald City.

Good job Scott. That's happened to me several times. One came in after SIX months. I said the same thing "Would you mind refreshing my memory please". Since my middle name is "quick-turnaround" I'm not used to waiting months land a lead. Just yesterday I landed one, he called, I told him "Get me the script and I can have it to you first thing in the morning". The client said "Oh....we won't be needing it untill late November or December!".

Sometimes I get a bit nervous on those rare occasions when someone books me so far in advance. I worry that there's too much opportunity for one or more knuckleheads to get involved with the project and derail it.

I also get a chuckle when somebody apologizes for being so "last minute" when calling to book something less than a week ahead of time. I sometimes set their minds at ease by confiding that three days in advance is not "last minute;" three hours in advance is last minute. I'd say the vast majority of my business comes with less than 48 hours notice.

BTW, I love threads like this because they remind us that not all of our auditions have been lost in the ozone, never to be heard from again. I'm so used to quick-hit jobs that I sometimes lose sight of the fact that there are a few rare individuals out there who actually plan in advance and there's always the hope that some old half-forgotten audition will shockingly emerge to bear fruit. And that's almost like getting a surprise inheritance from a long-lost relative you never knew existed.

Well, ironically, in light of this discussion about those jobs 'months down the road', I just got a phone call today from another V123 client from in the past.

I did a job for these folks many, many months ago.
Then, several months later, they posted another job plus sent a direct invitation to me. I talked to them, and they liked my read, but then the project was put on hold. That was at LEAST 3-4 months ago. Today, out of the blue, they called and asked if I was still interested; that the project was on again. Of course I said yes. So again... ya just never knows.

These things come in threes, so don't forget to keep us posted on the other surprise job you get between now and Monday. Wink

That's great news Scott, congrats...guess that is a good thing about the permanency of the Net, I had the same thing happen from an old V123 lead from like March or April which I didn't get the first time, but they said they'd be contacting folks later, of course I moved past, then 2-3 weeks ago I got a call out of the blue and it was the people from that lead way back when, and I am now doing audiobooks for them!

Thanks also for your appraisal of my sweet soul audition in the other thread, I'm a funky white guy Cool

Nicely done, Scott! I just heard I got the job for Chevy's "Heartbeat of America" campaign! Then the Miller "Tastes Great/Less Filling" guys called! Wow!

Just kidding; weak attempt at humor invoking "ancient" ad campaigns. Good work.
