In defense of Alesis, I use an Alesis Multi-mix 12. I run a Rode NT1A thru a dbx 286A Processor. I use very little EQ and moderate compression. The Lafontaine piece I submitted was done this way. If I were Phyliss, I wouldn't dump the Alesis just yet....something else is wrong in the chain.

There's not much of a chain! Mic into Alessis into firewire. Unless her mics are defective, that leaves the Alessis. It does sound like bad digital-to-analog coversion or what we call "artifact." Poor Phyllis is going to get as many opinions as there are people she asks.

Phyllis - my standard solution to this kind of thing is to methodically replace/bypass each item in the chain individually - until you find the culprit. I know you have a good relationship with your music store (lucky) maybe they'd be willing to loan you a different mixer to do your test? You have your new mic coming as well. Take an afternoon - and start experimenting.

Let us know what it was when you find it!

The store only has the Alesis (and something smaller that had tons of artifact noise). But I am going to experiment. Attached is a short narrative on my AT mic, no wind screen, talking right at it, no compression or EQ. It is 128/44.1 mono

I ask ya'll - does this have the same swishy/artifacty sound as all the others?

Next step - switch to the SML990 and see what that produces.

You had said that you were sending demos at 64 previously and now this one is at 128. That seems to help. S's are still "funny" but better. Almost too much S now.

Phyllis - that sounds much better - your new pop filter should cut down on your sybalance also. Let's hear the other mic with the same settings.

Here is a clip with the MXL990, no wind screen, nothing, no processing at all, just like the AT3031. Once I post my view of your voice (probably tonight), my comments about "the verticals" will make sense.

Pretty damn good Phyllis... but I hear "plosives" and still some "artifact."
But, a LOT better than before.

I always enjoy a challenge. So I went into my studio and in two takes laid this down . no eq and no effects no nothing... just me. But boy I had fun!

I really want to know what all of you think.

Phyllis-
I think if LaFontaine himself read Scott's script, he would have readit just like your last one.

You are priceless!

I never did throw out my "best LaFontaine" so here it is. Hey, I'm bored, it's Sunday and there are no leads.

Phyllis - You, my friend, are a hoot! Sounds MUCH better on both mics. Colin is right - a little artifact action still going on (more on the AT than the MXL - I think) - but MUCH better. Again - I think the pop screen will help you out even more.

Can't wait for the "word from above".
