Today, for the first time I received copy for a two person, male/female part.
what is the best way to approach copy that only requires you to do the gender related parts, not knowing how the other person will interpret their read.
Thanks, Lynne |

In my experience, I never met the other person, nor heard how they did it until I received a copy of the finished spot. I think they may have been given a sampling of how I was going to do it to get a feel. Of course, I was a character, so it might be different if it's a straight read.
Assuming there is no further direction given from the producer, I suggest just going with how it sounds in your head first - what makes sense to you as you read through it.
Anyone else? |

Lynne,
I beleive it to be an itneresting question you are asking. What is the tone of the spot, do you have both parts on the script?
Determine what your characther is doing and how 'she' should sound, then simply assume yur counterpart will do the same.
When I get this type of spot (which is more often that I like), I read both parts, doing my best characterization of the femle part (in my head). I imagine what a friend who is a female voice artist would sound like doing this part.
This concept gives a good idea of timing and style. Then it is just a matter of editing the female sciprt copy out of the audio... and sending the file to the client.
I usually leave the space in for timing purposes.

Scott, Frank, thanks for the input.
I like the idea of recording both male/female, then edit before sending, conversating with myself is nothing new!
Frank, you mention leaving the spaces in for timing. with an audition piece
is that benificial as the client is in a hurry to hear many takes on their copy? |

Sorry, I guess I did not read about it being an audition, so "No" to spaces, and "Yes", to sending just a snippet - the best part of the recording - to the potential client.
