A question for those with more experience at this than I... I have always struggled with "swallowing my L's." Think Tom Brokaw. I think I have a strong voice other than that. Short of hiring a voice coach to try to correct this, anyone have any advice?

Over-pronouncing your copy will help. Try it and see what happens. Wink

Practice pronouncing your Ls the right way over and over and over and over. Your speech pattern has become an ingrained habit and the only way to fight it is to be super aware when reading copy and to become comfortable with a new way of speaking. Try to correct it in your everyday speech as well so it becomes as second nature as any other sound. It could take some time. Concentrate.

If I'm not careful my New York accent can come through when I'm reading so I really have to stay aware of how I sound. Not exactly the same thing but an example of how we sometimes have to be hyper vigilant when dealing with a natural flaw. If I get lazy or tired it comes out more. Hope this helps.

Consider writing yourself a script with lot's of "L's" in it. I had a friend that was having an issue with "S's" so wrote her a script with lot's of those. As you practice that, listen/practice, etc. that will help, along with Erik's advice.

"Living large in LA, Larry limped along loosely following his life's dream. Luging. That's right, Larry was a luger- and not from Lithuania. Larry was actually from Louisiana. "LaPlace Louisiana" to be location specific."

I lope that lelps.

well... ummmm... my McClosky voice coach went over this w/ me.. keep the tip of your tongue resting lightly behind your upper two teeth... be mindfull of when your tongue "wings up" inside your mouth and relax it..

plus, a good ole tongue stretch helps: out and down towards the floor; let go and allow it to relax and receed back into your mouth..

oh, and dont forget to breathe properly...

anyway, thats the take from this student...

Be Well
