Greetings,
I just signed up to this site. I'm interested in using my voice for jobs. I've been told many times that I have a "radio" voice and that I should do something with it.
This site seems pretty busy and I don't know where to start, but I figured that a voice coach might be a good idea. If I could find a voice coach to refine my voice skills and also advise me on the workings of the industry, then I think that would be a great benefit.
Can anybody help me? I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Thank you.

A lot of the people I've met who want to get into voiceover work, but have to lose that "radio voice" first, have found acting classes, especially improv classes, help a lot.
It's a huge hurdle for a lot of radio-type guys to crossover into the more lucrative world of commercial VO; others seem to make the transition more smoothly. The key is finding that natural read and learning how to truly connect with the copy. Good luck! |

Harlan Hogan's site has a large list of voice coaches. There's a place to start. (http://www.harlanhogan.com/)
If you can't find one near you, some coaches do their thing via telephone sessions...I know that Susan Berkeley does, and James & Penny do, and I think Nancy Wolfson does. there are probably others. |

Since you're a good Canadian lad, Rod, I'll jump in with a longer-than-usual greeting here.
First off, take Amy's advice.
There are dozens of amateur theatre troupes in every community thirsting for volunteers. Get in there; and get busy. Act. Improv. Act. Improv.
It can only help.
And if you're thinking that you don't want to get up and do stuff in front of a hundred people, call V123 and tell them that Aunt Amy and Uncle Rob think you should do something else for a living.
In short, if you can't act, you can't voiceover.
If you're still keen, do get a voice coach. You may want to start on the inexpensive side by hooking up with one of the resident gurus at this site.
I'm not shilling for anyone, so I wouldn't want to mention any names.
But if I were, I'd mention Phyllis K. Day.
That would at least give you an informal start.
Mostly, listen to reels at voicebank.com, thebigfishvoicecompany.com, and our own poorly-named Demo of the Day thread.
If you think one day you can do that...forge on!
If you don't, call V123 and tell them that Aunt Amy and Uncle Rob....(you know the rest).
Voice On? |

| Oh...and if you see how difficult it is to get started, and how hard it is to get to the top, and you STILL want to do it...then maybe you have what it takes. |

Rod,
I'll recommend fellow V123'er Phyllis Day for some voice coaching as well. I've had a couple of sessions with her and am looking foward to more. She'll advise you on how to use the full range of your voice. Send her a PM to find out more.
Cheers,
Cameron |

Colin,
She's still around--busy I'm sure. By the way, I just PM'd you about something else.
Cheers,

Hey there! I'm moving my reply to "Chit Chat" about where I have been and what I have been doing.
And now, on topic, yes, I'm available. I coach on the utilization of your voice - getting the most out of your sound. Thanks for the plugs, Cameron and Robert.

Say, thanks for telling me! Good to see/hear you too. Funny thing, it was a PM from a lurker who read Robert's comments about my voice coaching that got me to come back to post. This lurker said that they figured I'd already seen the post - which I hadn't - which let me here.
Meanwhile, the fellow who started the thread looking for a voice coach hasn't contacted me - but two other people did and will be working with me. My first session with a person is always free - and short - about 15 minutes (but usually longer). They learn things about their voice they didn't know and it's all good.
And as Robert can tell you, even the best and most seasoned voice talent can learn more about how they are using their voice, throat, face, tongue, teeth (yes teeth) to produce a good or not so good sound - and how to sound even cleaner and clearer. And sometimes the "misuse" of these parts can also add charm or make your voice more distinctive. However, having the ability to use this "misuse" to your advantage is important to learn.
You for example, have what I call a voice coming through a lace and jeweled curtain. Nikki Saco has the same kind of voice (in my sight), and I find both lovely to hear and see, it makes me smile. However, if you could by choice speak with that curtain removed, or choose to use it, you would have more range - reads with the curtain, reads without, depending on what the client wanted. I can't say, never having heard you without the curtain, but I think without it you might sound older - or maybe more serious in an e-business sort of way.
This "curtain" is more common among people who speak Spanish - just as pure bell tone voices are seen almost exclusively in Asians - and what I call horizontal clay bars in African American voices - regardless of how southern they sound. When non AA's imitate the sound, they can produce the clay bar sound, but the bars are not lined up the same. It's very interesting to be in my head sometimes, I must say.... _________________ Phyllis K. |

Phyllis,
You say the most beautiful things! You sure purty up the joint-- don't you ever leave us again!
You've got to know I'm just dying to get a session with you but (alas) cash flow just isn't. Flowing. Well, it is.... but just out. I'm not complaining.. I've got loads to be thankful for (my health & health of my family, roof over our heads, food on the table) it's just tight. Tighter'n me trying to squeeze my size 14 body into my old size 5 clothes-- and just as sad & way not pretty.
But, I'm the eternal optimist-- but a weird one-- hoping for the best but expecting the worst. But I always say, Ya just never know.
So, I'm not sure when it will be but you can bet your bottom dollar that as soon as I'm able I'll be knocking on your door faster than you can say... well... uhhh...well... something short (wow, and I was in improv. Yipe!)
I for one (of many, I'm sure) am thrilled to see you back gabbin' it up on the forums. YEA! |

Dina--
If you can do it sooner than later, I would suggest it! I am happy to say, I am ONE of the two she spoke about above and I was very happy with our conversation. I have some homework I'm working on for her and when I'm ready, we'll be having our first 1 hour consult.
Her services for me will mean FAR MORE than just voice over work... I'm a public speaker and vocalist and coaching on the kinds of things Phyllis coaches on is SO BENEFICIAL for all of these things!
She's a doll (did you hear me Phyllis?) and she loves chocolate! Especially dark chocolate as a vegetable! You'll have to ask her more about this subject...
Shoot her an email Dina-- you won't be sorry you did!
