I live in L.A. and I'm considering classes at K&K. Can anyone offer any insight? Recommended? I hear the name all the time but would like some firsthand accounts if possible. or

I know someone who very recently took a couple classes there and liked it - of course, these were his very first forays into voiceover.
However, when I hear of them, they seem to have good reviews/recommendations.
If you are closer to OC, I can recommend a place in Irvine.

I've heard from a friend that I might wanna skip K&K if I'm not a complete noob, which I'm not. But then, who knows? I'm attaching my way-too-long demo (yes, I'm working on editing it, seeking input on voiceover Idol forum) to see if y'all can help me judge. I've got an appointment with Nancy Wolfson in May, but I want to make sure I take advantage of every training opportunity, y'know?

| There are so many places to get VO training out there that it is hard to tell the difference. I have seen some talents on this site and others that don't seem to be doing any better off than me (not saying a whole lot) that offer classes. Someone had said on another post, and I know this from my past job as a writer, that a lot of those that can't do, teach. You have to make income somehow. The question is, who can you find in your area that can help you the most, not rip you off, and also has a name that might resonate with the powers that be (agents, production houses, studios, etc.) to help you further your career when you list your training on your resume.

Kalmenson is legit. They are a major VO casting company. So, if anyone knows how the industry works...its them. You know, sometimes there is more to it then just using a voice coach as a voice coach. Some of them have big time contacts that can get you gigs or an agent.
Bottom line...thumbs up on Kalmenson.

Gina,
I've never been to K&K, but have gotten a few "go and see 'em, they're good" e-mails from friends. They sound pretty good. I understand they have a "method" they use, so you have to start at the ground floor.
One that I can suggest is the classes from Blupka. Susan Blu and Cynthia Songe teach commercial and animation classes. They're tough to get on the roster, so check out the web site for info at www.blupka.com and sign up for the mail list...
Oh, and they also produced my Animation and Commercial demos if you'd like a sample of the work.
Hope this helps,
Joe J Thomas

Gina,
I very highly recommend Kalmenson & Kalmenson and I've taken six classes there, considerably broadening my understanding of the craft. I tossed the Demo I had in the trash after my first class there, and took my time making my next. They are honest, straightforward, extremely professional, and, for me, a real help toward my goals.
Best to you,
George Woodward

Hey Gina -- pretty sure I know you from MJ's. We crossed paths again for the Panasonic spot over at The Phelps Advertising Agency many moons ago.
In any event, I'm over at Kalmenson & Kalmenson presently, in my second class there and already on board for a third. I've hit a few places in Los Angeles and from what I've experienced, Kalmenson's is the best place to train.
The Method is definitely helpful: within 2 weeks there were noticeable differences in my voice overs, such that I went from booking every now and then to booking at least one a week. Big difference. Just using the old demo until the new one gets made, but also, quickly, saw that the demo was in the so-so range.
Someone said you have to start at the beginning at Kalmenson's, and that's not true. You can go directly into the professional class if you make most of your money doing voice over, have a demo and an agent. Talk to Donna Du Baine if you can, she'll answer all your questions. That said, will probably run into you again at some point.
Best,
-Ed

Thanks for the input, y'all. I'd heard that you can't audit at K&K, and that's making me think twice. I'm hesitant to pony up for a whole run of classes before auditing.
And Ed, sorry, but you must be thinkin' of someone else. I don't know MJ. But if all goes well, we'll cross paths anyway!
Cheers,
Gina

I Gina!
First off, K&K is one of the top casting offices in LA. And I personally know many of the players. I say go for it! One of the things I so admire about the K&K gang is their phylosophy of personal branding. They strive for each student/actor to find their own individual sound/voice. It's really all about being able to convey your personality into the copy. This means finding your personal brand. No one in this business needs another voice. Good God, they have all the voices they need. What they DON'T have and what they DO need is YOUR individual stamp.
That all said, I took a listen to your demo. You have a nice brand!!!! Loads of personality. Yes, your demo is way too long! Cut it to a minute! Also, I'm hearing a lot of sameness in your demo. Sounds like the same mic, same music library, etc. Your demo needs to sound like real spots. That means that both you AND the production have to have variety. When your demo is made up of real spots, they are recorded on different days, with different mics, in different studios, etc. This adds a variety in the quality from spot to spot that your demo lacks at times. That said, much can be fixed in the mix. I think you have a great personality! Check out Bill Holmes at Compost Productions. He does a nice job of spicing up demos.
Best!

Thanks for asking a great question, Gina. I've been thinking about taking classes there for awhile now.
I just signed up for the "voice over for actors level 1" course this morning. I'm excited. I've taken some great classes over at Blupka and some great private lessons, but primarily aimed towards animation. I can't wait to take a full course just in commercial voice over.
