Hello fellow voicers,

Has anyone had this mysterious throat thing. No infection, not sick, just a hoarseness and very dry cough. I have been battling this stupid thing for almost six weeks now. I can NOT do any auditions because I sound like I have been sucking on gravel. I have been to the doc., two RX and so far no clear vocal cords. I can't warm up enough to get through it, nothing helping. Any suggestions, comments and or thoughts?
I have done everything I KNOW to do and I am really, really frustrated at this point!!! kopf gegen wand

However, after reading the 'price suggestions' and some of the leads coming through I don't appear to have missed out on to much. Wink

Hey Heather,

Just started for me this week. A little cold, then it crept into my throat.
Wife's had if for a couple weeks now.
Other people 'round here too...

Plenty of liquids and vit-C for me,
Joe

Thanks Joe! If I drink much more water I am going to float down the muddy Mississippi and end up in CA! LOL Man, this stinks!

I hope for your sake yours doesn't last near as long. I would say go to the doc., now! If your wife hasn't gone yet, her also. It's not going away on it's own. We had a cold snap again after summer showed up in March! Had it been strictly allergies I was hoping the cold spell would have helped.
But alas.....it did not.................. Crying or Very sad

For about the past 5 days I've felt like I either had a slight cold or possible allergies - which I've never had before. Slight runny nose and shtuff in my throat. Monday I tried to do some v/o work and had to finally give up. It's slowly improving, but it's been a bit mysterious. Fortunately it hasn't gone on as long as yours has! Six weeks! I'd check with a doctor.

Thanks Scott!
I went last Tuesday. Clear chest X-Ray, no infection, not coughing at night, or any other sickness type symptoms............sigh........!
Basically they don't really know what it is! Tried a steroid: didn't work. Now I am on some type of inhaler. Basically it seems to be a crap shoot. However, whatever it is, is going around. I know of several others who have the same thing and can't seem to shake it! Whatever the hell 'it' is..... OMG maybe it's the blob and I haven't known it was very slowly taking over my body......... Laughing

OK, so not only am I frustrated, I am getting really bored! Wink

Whoa! Heather, I'm sending a semi-truck full of good vibes your way (it's ok, we have plenty out here in CA Wink)

... and I'm calling my DR today - had a sinus headache all night. Best to nip it in the bud!

Nip it, nip it, nip it,
Joe

Anytime I run into throat-problems, I refer to Neil Young's line: "That's my sound, man!" Smile

Update: saw the Dr - mine's a cold that went rogue, and turned into a sinus infection. Got my z-pack and should be right as rain by the weekend...

Healthy wishes to all,
Joe

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one. Its been bad enough battling this lingering nasality after that horrible sinus infection I had in mid March. Now, yesterday, I've come down with yet ANOTHER one. I can't do any voice work at all, unless someone out there needs a "before" voice in a cold med ad. Now, God only knows if I'll EVER get rid of the nasality thing. hilfe

I wish I had some good advice for you, Heather. I got a horrible case of laryngitis after attending a Van Halen concert in Sept of '04. (Yes...I could NOT stop screaming from the excitement of being only a few feet away from my one and only, life long, true love...Eddie Van Halen) I couldn't do any voice work at the tv station for about 2 weeks cause it was so bad. The only thing that really helped me was spending about 2 days near a humidifyer and avoiding any and all talking during that time. Have you tried that?

Ronald, this has gone on so long that I think it is my sound.....all be it, I sound like I have a five pack a day habit! Scary part is I have never smoked a day in my life....ok, maybe two weeks in high school...... Laughing
At this rate I should have kept auditioning with the new raspy, sexy voice!

Joe...you are Z-man! lachtot OMG I cracked myself up!!

Lisa, girlie, I feel your frustration. I can't not talk to people unfortunately. Because of my other life....... But, I am sure trying to sing Irish tunes in a smokey bar over the weekend didn't help anything........ Embarassed
Eddie V.....great crush choice!! I would have probably done the same thing! He would almost be worth loosing your...voice to for a while.

But seriously, I have tried everything I have ever been told or knew about on my own. I did have my humidifier going for a while but then stopped because the St. Louis natural humidity had taken over(aka the arm pit of the midwest). I think I will start using it again tonight. It sure can't hurt anything.

Hey, how's all my sick stay-at-homies?

Just checkin up on everyone.

I'm on day 4 of my z-man pack.
Wish I could say I felt better, but I can't seem to shake this one-sided headache (nose, brow, upper teeth).

Hope y'all are on the mend,
Joe

Hey Joe,

Sorry to hear your Z-pack hasn't kicked the crud out by now.

I started an ADVAIR inhaler Monday night. One minutes I think it might be helping and then I will start a coughing phase again......
Woke up this AM with a bit of a sore throat...........
Calling the doc back in the morning.

This is getting very, very old!!

Have a great day!

Smooth as gravel, myself, Joe... Sorry to hear about all the afflictions, folks. Time to dust off the old nasal irrigator again?

I'm fighting off a TERRIBLE cold right now. My kids were passing it around a week or so ago and I kept feeling SOMETHING coming on... a lot of sneezing and throat irritation, and within the past day or so it hit me hard. Had to bail out of church this morning, and I was supposed to play in the band. Unfortunately, I HAVE to go into work here shortly at the radio station. At the moment I feel miserable, and actually had to voice some e-learning this morning.
