Hi Marsha -
I think you've got a good start. There's a lot of good energy in your reads and I think you have a wonderful flavor of voice! In terms of things you might want to listen for: I think your read is too similar from spot to spot, and is often too "read" (if that makes sense). You might want to get some variety in there in terms of showing off what your voice is capable of. No doubt you've got a particular niche covered, but you want to demonstrate that you can fill a number of niches!
As always, working with a seasoned coach is always helpful, whether you're just starting out or been at it for years.
But, I definitely think you've got the makings for success if you keep at it. Good luck! |

Hi Marsha...
You might be better off and get more response if you move this posting over to the "voiceover Idol" thread where people go to solicit feedback. But since I'm here and listening anyway...
- Website demo: Like the perky smile in your voice and the friendliness that easily comes across. But I don't care for the demo. The quality is awful and there's just not much happening there.
- Jumped down to the Genuine Care with music. You have a very pleasant voice with nice tone and excellent diction. You DO have that smile in your voice, but your delivery comes across too rhythmic; there's not that real "talking to your best friend" feel to it.
- Jumped down to the music festival spot: Audio quality is weak and I hate that your voice sounds like you're in a pipe. Overall, this is not a good demo spot for you for any number of reasons. Your voice is not a power voice or a hardsell voice. The sped up disclaimer at the end is not good. Don't worry about trying to do power sells. It ain't you.
Here's what I come away with:
- You have a very good voice. Honestly. You need training. You have very good groundwork from which to start, but you need for a pro - AND experience - to help get you from here to there... 'there' being where you can start pulling in some decent voice jobs. You need to work with a good producer on assembling some real demos. One-spot pieces don't work well as demos, and what you have out there right now technically won't stand up to the competition you're up against. You need to masterfully and patiently work at creating some demos that piece together little sample snippets of what you do best, so that the client is dying to hear more. Down-tempo, friendly girl-next-door relational stuff is right up your alley. Probably things like children's audio books, too.
Take the time to browse voice123 and listen to demos of your competition; being sure to find the real pros out there; the ones who obviously are successful at this. The first one that comes to my mind is Julie Williams. Pick apart what it is that makes their demos shine and aim for that.
Work hard, get trained, be relentless, patient, and persistent, and you could do just fine in this industry.
All the best! |

Hey there,
You have a great sound--lots of potential! But I agree that you need some training.
Sounds to me like you're emphasizing every word, putting attention on the WORDS themselves instead of WHAT you're talking about. You don't want people to listen to your demo and think "nice voice," you want them to listen to your demo and be drawn into that PRODUCT/CONCEPT/IDEA that you are selling.
Basically, everything you say in your read should sound like you're thinking out loud; like something that you happen to know from personal experience with the product. It's pure product loyalty. |

Hummm, you are right i do focus on how i am saying the words instead of the subject i am speaking about. I have a few voice recordings to do for local clients---this will challenge me to sound different. I will send it out to see how i am sounding.
Thank you so much!!! |
