Chris,

I use my laptop for recording when I'm on vacation or trips. One setup that works and sounds great without costing you an arm and a leg is a Presonus Firebox (if your system has Firewire), with a CAD M177 mic. If your system doesn't have Firewire I'm sure it has USB and there are tons of USB options. The CAD is WAY under rated. Sounds great and you can find'em at www.frontendaudio.com. The price versus sound is amazing.

I'm not familiar with the CAD M177, but the price is awfully good.

I've worked in radio for years and there are two dominant mikes used in most stations, Shure's SM-7 (now defunct, I believe) and SM-8, and the Electrovoice RE-20, which is what I use. Either one can be found in the $350 - $500 range depending on where you look and whether you go new or used. Your mike is your biggest and most important investment when you do this stuff.

I also use a very simple $80 Behringer MX802A mixer to run from the mike into the computer. It all works quite well.

For those who might be interested, here's a clip of the CAD M177 and Firebox pres. Oh, and thought I'd mention I've got the CAD for sale. Doesn't get much use next to my U87 and MKH-416. If your interested drop me a line.
