Well I found out two things....First I had a sign board outside on the balcony against the window....It was rattling during the wind storm so it got moved. I had no idea it was helping to keep noise out...
The most important thing though was I did not realize that I had to set the bit rate every time...I thought I could set it and forget it. It was defaulting to a low rate....I'm glad I figured it out.
The mic had moved around a bit as well.
The gain is fine though.

I just found your reply with a solution to some of your "tin" was the way you were setting the bit rate. You mentioned that when you set it each time, it works fine, but if not, it defaults to the lower rate.
Were you talking about doing that using Audacity? Because I've had similar problems.

ahhh Yes....as soon as my sound engineer roommate got home I asked him....... and that's exactly what he said!
......I've learned so much in 4 months about engineering. Roger said I could sit in on the "pitch correcting in pro tools" part of one of the classes he teaches at the University of New Haven as long as I teach that same class about VO for a day (He'll be explaining how it pertains to editing and adding music beds sound effects and all that) I'll provide the scripts and the direction and teach acting skills even though they are learning to be behind the mic......not necessarily in front of it.
Roger has Pro Tools on his computer upstairs and I use Digital Performer downstairs. I've never tried audacity.
Thanks for the post anyway.
