Probably shouldn't have done it but bought a Presonus TubePre today. I had a little extra cash from some various things. Here is my first recording with it. This is... Presonus TubePre... line level into a Symetrix 528e voice processor... into a LynxOne PCI audio interface. A little further processing in post. Don't know if it is leaps and bounds over the built-in Symetrix solid state preamp or not, but I'm still playing with the controls. _________________ www.ColinCampbellVoice.com

Sounds pretty good Colin. Try one without the Symetrix in the line and let us hear just the tube pre.
I go into a Studio Projects VTB-1 tube pre then into a small mixer (for level control & monitoring, NO EQ) then into the computer. I get a very good sound like that and it only gets better with the processing I run it through in post. _________________ Allen Scofield

As previous posts will tell you, I am an "old school" fan of feeding the digital with good quality processed analog. I will try what you suggest soon but I know if I take the Symetrix out of the line, I will sound like sh*t. _________________ www.ColinCampbellVoice.com

Heh heh heh....okay. I have an outboard processor that I could run my VTB-1 through...but I chose to retire it instead and it now inhabits a lower shelf in the studio. I like the tube sound the VTB-1 gives me and it's even better when I process it a little. It will also depend on your mic.
You'll definitely sound different without it (to your ears) but ya just gotta try it and see. Add a little more tube each time you record. I started at the 12 o'clock position and went from there. I didn't go far. I keep it around 12:30. The tube gives a nice, full (warm) sound with my set up.
I'm a former radio jock myself and was very used to hearing a heavily processed voice on everything I did. But after a while, I got used to being without it....and I like it better. I think I sound better and can adjust it with a plug-in or two in post.
ATTN Joe and/or Amy! You have a Presonus Tube Pre, how do you have your's set up? _________________ Allen Scofield

Yeah, Joe and Amy... what are your "drive" and "gain" controls at... "clockwise?"
I read the manual and as always try to understand the technical myself without a myriad of advice but it is always a good starting place.
As an aside, I replaced 12AX7's in the audio amps of televisions at my first tech job as a TV repairman (kid!) in the late 70's and now I have one in my mic pre! Wow.. strong! _________________ www.ColinCampbellVoice.com

Hey Colin,
My setup goes from Mic to TubePre to Audio Card Line-in - no processing until it's in digital format.
As for Drive and Gain, my Drive is at about 10 o'clock normally, and I vary the Gain between 12 o'clock and 3 o'clock based on the gig. And all of the buttons are "off", though I *sometimes* use PAD...
How about you Amy?
