I think many of us have gotten jobs that we auditioned for weeks or even months ago ... sometimes it takes a while longer for the client to get their poop in a pile (so to speak).
I believe many of these jobs promising continuing work really mean: continuing work IF the pilot works ... IF the customer buys in ... IF the website generates some revenue ........... |

Love this forum---good advice---you guys are great. I'm encouraged.
And, Scott---Yep, I think we're talking about the same lead. As I recall, they made some pretty harsh demands about production, editing, etc. Does that sound familiar? At any rate, I hope it's legit and I hope you got the gig! |

Whenever any client says something along the line of promising future work, don't believe it. I have been doing this stuff for 30 years on and off and NOT ONCE has there ever been repeat work from someone who promised it for some sort of concession. It DOESN'T HAPPEN. Repeat business only comes from a good relationship from a single well done and well paid for job, and even then it's tough. I don't know why it is but clients just look at us as some sort of gullible commodity who will jump at any promise. Generally in the world as a whole, everyone is trying to figure out how not to pay. You do a good job in a timely manner and are praised generously only to then hear "my cilent hasn't paid me yet" after months of trying to collect. It took me four months to collect from a local job recently after being told several times "it's in the mail" when it wasn't. When I used the US Postal Service finally to send an invoice, the invoice was returned. The address the guy gave me was bogus. After much consternation, contacting his emplyer, threatening to contact his ultimate client, etc. I finally recieved a money order from him. Aparently he doesn't have a checking account. Sorry for the rant. _________________ www.ColinCampbellVoice.com

| Tell them that you're Sicilian and "you got cousins". Works for me. |

You kid - but I do MOH for a "Import business" in New Jersey. The guy who recommended me for the job a few years ago said: "Take good care of "him" ... no, really ... Don't screw this up." He was COMPLETELY serious. |

| Odd to hear that there is little repeat work, Colin. In IVR there is loads of it. Depending on the gig, once a client "locks in" their system to a voice, if they want updates they have to go to the original talent, or redo the whole mess. I have found over the years that 80% of my work in IVR has been for updates of one or two prompts. Some of these happen as often as monthly over the course of several years. These always get billed my one hour minimum rate, except under special circumstances, so they end up becoming pretty lucrative if you get enough of them. |
