Tim Russert, NBC journalist and political heavyweight host of "Meet the Press," has died after collapsing at NBC's Washington news bureau, a source said. He was 58 years old.
In addition to his weekly program, Russert appeared on the network's other news shows, was moderator for numerous political debates and wrote two best-selling books.

Russert was just back from a family trip to Italy and was in his Washington office working when he collapsed. NBC said he was recording voiceovers for Sunday's "Meet the Press."

So Sad. My thoughts go out to his family.

How very sudden and very sad. And so young. One of my favorites at NBC. I will miss him.

I am so sorry to hear this. His family is in my prayers. He was a TopNotch journalist.

I just got home and flipped on the news to catch up on the day and saw this....How utterly sad and unexpected, he was so young. I watched him all the time and thought he was just wonderful.

My prayers are with his family and I will miss him very much.

The day before Russert's untimely passing, another great NBC voice was silenced: sportscaster Charlie Jones.

I'm very saddened to hear of both Tim Russert's and Charlie Jones' passing (I had no idea that Mr. Jones had died, Lee, until your post here - have seen nothing on TV about it.) Both these men were giants in broadcasting.

My condolences to both families....and especially, to "Big Russ" today. It's so unnatural for a father to be burying a son, especially at his stage in life. It has to be especially difficult for him.

It's a poignant reminder that we should live every day to the fullest and be thankful for every moment we have to enjoy our families and our friends for we know not when we or they will be gone from one another's presence.

Rest in Peace, Tim & Charlie.

Scott...

My hat's off to you for using the word "journalist" in the name of this thread. Tim Russert was a journalist's journalist, so to speak. He set the bar high for everyone and it showed every time he was on "MTP" or any other NBC program.

His passing is profoundly sad not only for this country, as we have lost a passionate voice, but for those of us involved in some way, shape or form with the business of broadcasting. We have lost another link to an era of American broadcasting that was more concerned about actual journalism than it was about looks, youth and inexperience.

Rest in peace, my friend, and thank you for so many moving and insightful Sunday mornings.

As the world of broadcasting in general passes into the annals of history, so do its participants and talents.

Isn't it strange that only when a person such as Tim passes do we sit back and reflect on their greatness.

His smile alone was enough to tell you what the man was made of.

I have 2 favorite male journalists and now one has died. The thing that I liked most about Tim was that I was never sure if he was a Democrat or a Republican. He'd ask the tough questions no matter who he was interviewing. He also treated his guests with respect even if you could tell he disagreed with a policy. He was a family man. He was over weight and I think that was what caused his downfall. His death has inspired me to eat whole grains, fruits, and veggies. His death has inspired me to take more powerwalks and do more yoga and aerobics. His life has inspired me to vote in every election....(not just the presidential ones)

I saw his son on Larry King....the other night....He was sad...and yet happy. He made me laugh despite the pain. God bless Tim and all who loved him. Without Tim my Sundays will never be the same.....but I am grateful that Joel Osteen is not only on on Sunday.....but is on 3 times. hallo I dedicate this song to you Tim

BTW, I believe Mr. Russert was a Democrat... he worked on a number of Democratic campaigns before he became a journalist.

Well if I had to guess I would guess the same. I know he had compassion for the poor and people who do not have health insurance. I think he would vote either way though. He seemed more middle of the road and at least tried to report that way. His reporting was not one sided and therefore predictable.
