It has been nearly a week without a new post in the Newbie section. I just didn't want the newbie section to feel like no one cared. I care.

Thank you to all for your insight. I have learned more reading this forum than any amount of time I spent in radio. As I listened to the stack 'o spots I've recorded over the years and compared them to the professionals, I realized it was time to go back to the drawing board. I have spent the last 2 months with acting books... Reading EVERYTHING out loud (Did you know that according to the Weight Watchers points guide, a serving of squirrel is only 1 point?)My boyfriend is a saint.. Not only is he not annoyed, he encourages it. I even love reading the local paper. As I live in The Middle of Nowhere, FL, it really helps me work on the white trash dialect. (Bubba's runnin' for Tax Collector in the next election. no joke)
This process is definitely a learning experience. In building the studio, I even wielded a power tool. Although, there's a very good chance I'll lose some digits if I continue to use the table saw. Fortunately, success could still be mine with nubs.

Thanks again to all who post here. This is truly an amazing resource.

Rock on, Sara!!!!

Keep on keeping on!

Just know that books, though many are outstanding, can only teach you so much. Practical one on one is vital! I always get concerned when newbies talk of purchasing the mics, building the booths prematurely. No need to make large purchases until you are ready. You can get a decent mic for under $200 to practice.

Now, that all said, maybe you are further along in your journey and it is indeed time for the recording expenses for work purposes. If this is the case, break a lip! Just spend wisely! The place to spend early on is classes. Study, study, study, with everyone! Ask around for referrals. See if you can audit before signing up for a class.

Hi Sara,

Sounds like you've been working hard!

I'm in FL too! Where are you? I'm in Fort Myers, but I grew up in Sebring... what I think of as the middle of no where. Nothing but cows and orange groves.

Caryn

Sara Jay, you write like one very smart cookie. Sharp folks aren't usually delusional. That's always helpful in this business.

So welcome to the races and let us have a listen someday soon, 'kay?

Thanks again for the pearls.
The mic was a decent mic for under 200.. Moving forward, I'll probably be finding a new one, but for now, it's just fine. We got incredible deals on the other equipment. I am also fortunate that I have an engineer boyfriend. As much as this is for me, it's his baby.
I've begun singing lessons and am searching for acting classes.
See, I do listen.

I was typing a response to Bob and got more replies. Caryn, I grew up in the burbs of Chicago. Target on every corner. 24 hour Home Depots.. Everything else was the middle of nowhere to me. But now I'm 25 minutes to the nearest fast food (which I thankfully dislike) and 30 to the nearest Wal Mart. (also not too much of a hardship) Tallahassee is the nearest 'city' to me and it's an hour away. Without the FSU population, my 'burb was larger. It's taken some getting used to.. But I love it. It's like living the Discovery Channel.

Hey howdy hey! I was born in Ft. Myers Fl moved to VA, Ky, and finally Tn I got the Bubba dialect down haha, now if I can just talk somehow outside of that I should be in the clear.

I loved your writing style. Do you have a blog? I would be a faithful reader.

I highly recommend the news from the WWW! It has tremendously improved my read ability. I would like to hear some of your samples.

I'm about an hour from St George Island, but with global warming, I'll have beach front property in no time.
