Phyllis-
Your comments and critiques are so interesting. Most of it I don't understand, but am anxious to know exactly what you mean and I what I sould do or not do about it. The one that I understand I think is the chin down muffled thing.

It astonished me to read that. I had just started using this pantyhose kitchen strainer pop filter that to get in position on my mic causes me to really tilt down my head and chin to hit the center of the mic. Leave it up to me to waste two hours rigging something up to avoid spending 20 bucks. I am not sure if this is what you mean?

Finally, I don't understand anything else regarding the bars and tones. Even though I don't understand it, it seems to resonate as a read it. I just need help understanding it and figuring out how it impacts my reading and how to focus on the strengths it presents and minimize any deficiencies.

Interestingly enough, I spoke to my wife about the thought of seeing sound and she was familiar with that and has known some people who have that ability.

Phylliss, thank you so much for taking the time to critique what I am doing and my voice. It is so kind of you to do it.

George

The look of the sound you make (and I see) with your chin down is different than the look of the sound when your chin is in a natural position. As far as the way your voice looks, I talk about that so you can understand how what you are doing affects it. Some voices appear as bars to me, some as a block like clay, some voices are circles, like bubbles. You don't have to understand any of that, these are the things I see when I hear a voice.

Then, I see how distorted or impacted they are by, say, a chin down, or clenched jaw muscles, English as a second language, or even some emotional issue. For example, one critique I did recently showed the voice talent having a slightly pinched sound because he was using speech methods normally employed by his first language (which was not English). But I did not know that English was his second language.

I am glad your wife is aware of the oddity that is "seeing" sound. It is not magic or some weird "spiritistic" power. It's just a sensation, actually normal though not common. I sometimes wonder if I could help solve mysteries and crimes with this ability! It's the old adage of wanting to use uncommon abilities for the common good. Rolling Eyes I can also see whole muscial dance productions when I see music - not all music because some is junk - and the dances are different depending on the music - but the same piece always shows the same basic dance.

Phyllis-
I tried really hard to keep my chin high in this one. I was even trying to mentally project being high and open while I read.

Does it sound (look) different to you?

Yes, it does look different, your chin is too high, NO JUST KIDDING! Seriously, try to keep your chin level, keep your posture good by raising your chest by squeezing the muscles of your upper abdomen. Where your chin ends up when you do that, is where it belongs. (Yikes!)

That read was the best I've heard yet. Compare it to what you have on your website and the improvement is undeniable. In fact, take off your first read on your demo on the website, and add part of this instead.

Keep working to stay relaxed and your throat and head will be open by default. Concentrate on the shoulder muscles and those that attach to your neck. Try practicing while lying down. If you can, record how it sounds. It's harder to clench up when you're lying down but don't hold up copy, just try to do the read from memory. Having your hands holding up copy isn't very relaxing.

Also try to record first thing in the morning or better still, when you wake up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. It's hard to be tense then! (Unless of course you do it before you go to the bathroom. Not recommended.)

Phyllis-
Thank you for the analysis, coaching, and encouragement.

Can I still wear my hat while lying on my back and reading?

And Phyllis, when I get up at night to pee? My wife says I can't even hit the toilet, how am I going to hit the sweet spot on my mic.

I just want to say thank you again. I can't believe how much you helped me in such a short time. You insight is amazing!

I hope I can still squeeze in a question or two as I continue to digest what I have learned from you.

Tom:
Thanks for the MP3 Hello. Good to know you.
You realize, of course, that tinny, effeminate voices like yours are in much greater demand at fashion shows and recorded YMCA announcements...you know..."Pleath return all towelth to the really buff check-out stud".
I'm only suggesting that you may want to reconsider spending money here at Voice123. My God, man, here you have to endure the scathing barbs of Todd Ellis, the flitting stings of Amy (Queen Bee) Snively, the Angry-Uncle Bombast of Scott Pollak..not to mention the rumblings of Sid Whatley and the couch-hopping of Simon Hill.
Get out, Tom. Get out now. While there's still time.
Your voice is awful. Terrible. Consider becoming a mime.
Really.

Hi everyone....thanks for the welcome. I'm enjoying the forums. I'm really impressed with the wit and intelligence of most of the posters. I have to have it. I love the humor and the comraderie I have detected. Robert....thank you for the reality check on my voice....I figure I'll stick it out for a bit and see if I can break out of the fashion show scene....my next gig was supposed to be a YMCA announcement but I thought I should shake it before I get stereotyped with that sort of thing. NOT...hahahahaha Victor, I woke up this morning to about an inch of snow...we were supposed to get hit last night continuing into Tuesday, but I think (hope) last nights was all we get. We've been getting hit once a week every week for 4 weeks in a row. One week apart. The first dumped 3 feet in 24 hours where I live....the next week another storm dumped 2 1/2 feet in 24 hours....the next week another foot....this week 1 inch. May the trend continue....hahahahaha Anyway, that's 6 1/2 feet of snow in 3 weeks. At 48 years old I'm too old to be shoveling that volume of snow every week! Especially up here at 9,500 feet where the air is thin to begin with. Anyway....thanks for the welcome everyone. I'm just on the computer for the first time today and looks like I missed alot already.....looks like I have some files I need to post.
