Who gets the job?

...and of all those you hear on the radio and TV... how many times do you say to yourself... "if that guy can get that job... what am I doing wrong?" Mostly what I hear sucks so bad that I find myslef yelling at the TV saying "I can do that better."

Hey Robert,

Thanks for your input. I do respect your opinions, but I must resolve to disagree. I think the T-Shirt analogy supports my case just fine... it's all about intelligent, strategical marketing. Furthermore, I believe that a voice is a commodity. After all, that's why we are in this business, right?

From Webster's... "Commodity" (Noun); a useful thing; something that people value or find useful; something that can be bought or sold.

As both someone who auditions and works regularly as a talent and as someone who also hires talent, what you're suggesting doesn't take place for a number of good reasons.

Professional voicetalent have for many years tneded t o be rather tight lipped about the work they do. Besides doing work for national projects and concerns that I might want to promote my invovlement with, I also do work for large and small clients that isn't the type of thing I might want to associate my name with. I also happen to have a wide range and I'm not necessarily recognizable in the marketplace in all instances. In any case, as a voice talent, I want to have control over what projects I want to put on my resume and those I don't.

As for naturally assuming that if someone from here is not hired after an audition it represents fraud, that is incorrect. I have been in numerous video games where I was asked to read for an extra character or 2 and as a result, the person who might have been intended to come and do the job didn't. I've also seen numerous campaigns, commercial and otherwise fall apart during or shortly after casting. I've seen castings for men wind up using a woman. I've even seen a client resign an agency in the middle of production.

There may also be an unwillingness on the part of the client to have the voice talent represent themselves or use clips from a project for a variety of reasons. (Thisnk the spokesperson from Dell that got lockep up for smoking pot).

The unfairest part ofthis job and especially for those of us always seeking to improve our craft is that you onbly know if YOU got the job or didn't. You don't know if you're 2nd or 52nd choice. You also don't know if 300 people were considered for the job or if the person casting stopped listening to auditions at 12.

I should also mention that many of the auditions posted on here are also sent to Talent agents, other casting services and sometimes directly to actors. Just because someone wouldn't be hired from here doesn't mean that the audition was not on the ip-and-up.

Why don't we use this forum for posting our success....I'd be really interested to hear about who got what job...It does not need to be 'an official list'...I'll start. I just got my second check in the mail. I've been a member since October (I think) I personally am totally new to the whole technical aspect of this job but have been doing local radio and TV spots for years. (don't anyone listen to my demo's they stink and I'm re-doing them all)...Which means you don't have to be the best....just what the client wants...(at least I'm counting on that) Anywho, the job was for Shopwiki.com and involved sounding like a news announcer (my background) It was about two short paragraphs and paid 150.00.. Laughing

I'm completely blown away by it and it may be a total fluke but I am encouraged to keep on going and not worry if I am the 'best or not'...my philosopohy is 'do my best'.
I encourage others to share their 'winnings' in this forum and mostly encourage all of us to keep our chins up... Thanks, Marilyn Taylor

Hey everybody. I've got a real treat for ya. Colin Campbell mentioned that Orson Wells was the greatest VO artists of all time and if there is such a thing then Colin is right. I've got 3 actual VO session recordings that circulated the studios back in the 80's complete with out-takes. I have Orson Wells, Colonel Sanders & Dean Martin/Jerry Lewis. Gonna start a new subject here in The Pros-New Forum, download the sessions & give an explaination. Your gonna LOVE this!!
