Many jingles today are non-union. Music producers all over the world have learned that there are starving singers everywhere willing to work for food! Too bad. As a professional jingle singer for twenty years or so, I made huge amounts on residuals singing union jobs. I was on staff at three major jingle production houses singing three and more days per week! One jingle firm put me on a yearly contract! Those days dwindled down in about 1995. The early-nineties showed beginning decline and more and more non-union singing. Fortunately for me, I became a voiceover pro in about 1980 because I 'saw the light' about the jingle biz. Soon, my earnings from voiceovers far exceeded my earnings from singing. But a word to the wise for you today: You must be able to sing in four- to six-voice groups and sing record backgrounds too to make real money today. Singing solo is fine, but you should be a good music reader if you intend to work seriously in LA or Hollywood as a singer and that's where the big resid jobs come from. Most are union jobs. But still today, music producers call talents AT HOME and seldom book thru agents. I am honored to be presenting a workshop on Jingles for Talents and Their Coaches in Nashville at the annual conference of the Natiional Assoc of Teachers of Singing on the morning of June 29 at the Opryland Hotel there. And I'll be presenting a voiceover workshop open to the city while there on June 30, evening. I'm also doing private consultations in Nashville. Ask me for details as plans materialize on these. _________________ Bettye Zoller: CLIOS, ADDYS, GOLDEN RADIOS, AUDIES, Member Voice and Speech Trainers Assoc., AFTRA SAG, 34 years a pro. |

Well when I sing in bars and cafes I get paid....but the managers often include dinner and drinks as well. I never drink booze when I'm singing professionally but, I do know some singers who are willing to sing for the "buzz". I never have a hard time competing against them. They start slurring the pitch and words around midnight.
I prefer to sing original music but, in the clubs I usually end up singing cover tunes. I just got a private invitation on V123 the other day for a song. It is not a commercial jingle but the pay is $150. It's got a techno sound to it. Did anyone else get that audition? |
