As a Training Director for many years, I've developed and narrated many audiocassete (remember tape?) and Computer-based training programs and professional presentations. The prospect of getting into voiceovers is both exciting and intimidating. After browsing many of the talents on voice123, I'm beginning to understand how much I have yet to learn. I know my best chance to be successful is to receive brutally honest feedback from knowledgeable people. Right off the bat I know I need a better mic. I'm currently using a $60 on CO1. Beyond that, what do I need to work on to be successful? Thank you for your time and consideration.

Basically everything, Richard.
And not just you, mind, but all of us. With the marketplace teeming as it is, you need to start with ace deliveries to vault into a place among the top 5,000. Then you need to market yourself and get lucky enough to scramble into the top 1,000.

So: to start.
You sound very, very much like somebody reading the text. I got no sense in either of those reads that you had tapped me on the shoulder and said, "Hey you. Listen to this."
And the Navy Piece just has to go. Where the copy cried for power and oomph, you delivered a rather tentative and soft tone (with some quirky inflections, to boot.)

As a relative beginner, you must be especially attuned to material that fits your style. I would venture that e-training and long corporates might be a good place to start.
As time goes by, you'll be better prepared to apply the tone required.

In the meantime, listen to as many solid reads as you possibly can. Listen to radio and TV ads. Basically, just read the Newbies Sticky by Scott Pollak, and churn through the volumes of info in the Savvy archives.
Read a couple of books etc, etc.

You have a good voice. You have some background. The second read was rather nice.
Now you need some fire in your belly.
Welcome to these pages.

Robert,
I'm really pleased that you got back to me so quickly. I really didn't expect to hear from anyone the same day I asked for help. I value your comments and will take them to heart.
Thank you.
