I got a Zoom H4 today and it checks out nicely. It delivers 45.2V of phantom power (within spec) and costs half of what the Fostex costs.

Further testing reveals that the mic preamps in the Zoom H4 are rather noisy, so I don't consider this one ready for prime time yet.

They can put a man on the moon but designing a good mic preamp for these things seems to be an insurmountable challenge.
