Joseph, not to be too much of an a$$ here, but if you build it properly, with the idea of a DAW in place from the beginning, you won't need to use anything external.
In a perfect world, you'd have the PC in another room (for some of my rooms, I do with a terminal setup to access from the booth, if needed... most rooms don't even use that as I use control rooms). That said, we don't all live in a perfect world, and sometmes you have to have the DAW located in the same room as you (one room I'm about to finish is that way). Once you accept that reality, you then need to spec your parts properly.
There are tons of ways to cheaply reduce the sound of your case without spending tons of $. The rig I'm finishing for this project room is dead quiet without any external sound absorbtion being required (and no towels... I'm curious as to how much that would affect the internal temp, as just making sure it doesn't block the air flow might be good, but there's still going to be major heat issues since it'll act as an insulator, regardless of the feel of the case; that's the good and bad of a steel case when it comes to heat, you can't easily judge by feel what the temp of the CPU core is because of steel's conductive properties).
Piece of advice for folks. Use a CPU monitor or an infrared thermometer to get temps get a baseline at idle & then use a burn in tool to get the temps after putting the system through its paces (24 hours is a good time period IME). That's going to be your best measurement of thermal performance and tolerance. |
