I'm curious what I may be doing wrong? I know it's not my voice, because I do a lot of voice work locally...but I work in radio so that's my job...

hi travis,
i've been an actor for a long time (n.y. and l.a.), though i've never done voiceover work. i stumbled on these boards and felt compelled to respond to a few threads. i don't think there is a "wrong" or "right" way to approach getting work, whatever works for you. as your approach isn't working i'd hazard a guess that it's because you're not quite invested emotionally somehow (i mean a sense of connectedness in your voice, a sense of living truthfully in that imagined 2 second spot.) someone on here generously suggested imagining a scenario that's helped him in the past, and though his imagined circumstances (naked client, etc) empower him, it would serve to disconnect me from the material/story and therefore leave me feeling disempowered. which is to say,i'd focus on finding (your own, unique way into) the truth in whatever the material is about, find what it is that activates your very own way in to the material. our voices are direct lines into deeper realms- whether we're doing radio broadcasts or shakespeare, it's our humanity that is either arresting / valued (and therefore worth spending money on) or somehow missed no matter how low the talent fee...
try listening to harry shearer for a little soulful inspiration (he's writing his own material here so believing in it's easier, but still...) http://www.kcrw.com/etc/programs/ls he manages to communicate humor, truth, intelligence - all in his own unique way. he has a deep enough idea of what everything means to him to maintain a really light touch with the material.
you're off to a good start, hang in there.
good luck & best wishes,
