It may be a bit morbid or cruel but I have to laugh at the posts in this string. Would Mr. Gilbert like me to produce some HIP HOP backing tracks
for him??? It seems that if you have to try and slim down the competition,
by negative posts, you are not likely to find that many people here who neccisarily share your same opinion. Although, who really cares about another persons income except Banks and Creditors.

I don't make the majority of my money from V.O's, I make mine from
Private Studio Lessons, Production, MC'ing, DJ'ing and Remixing. I added this to my roster of talents to add supplimentary income to my already successful Career as a producer. Albiet I don't always do the jobs myself, I hire people too. Depending on the Job and requirements.
Has anyone ever MC'd weddings...A place to make more money for V.O's.

You have to be creative and innovative if you want to step up your game..That's why I've been dropping hint's in my posts,
to help individuals to be successful. I guarentee you no one else out there except me is set to capitalize on the Online Surround Sound Advertising Industry. The fact that you can now use the audio spectrum to add Subliminal messages will have significant impact on the voiceover industry now and in the future.

So should anyone, listen and recieve benefits in this forum ?
It's up to the individual. You learn from being observant, looking for trends, and of course being creative. Your voice is one part of the equation..an important part...but equally important is production skills
knowledge and technique. How many people here record in studios..
You should know studio costs can be quite high, are you forking out your money doing jobs for pro studios. Eg..If a studio charges $1000.00 for
a 30 second spot, and they hire you for $200.00, who's making more money??? Having a fundamental background in production will make you more money. YOU can have and make a successful living if you broaden
out. Look to new Ideas, team up with DJ's in the phone book.

DJ'ing will pay $500.00-$2000.00 for weddings. Depending on what the DJ can offer. That's a night of work. Some Dj's will offer MC'ing, is that something you can do??? Open your eyes, money exists beyond Radio and Television...Bring it on Gilbert!!!!!

Here...Gilbert Grape..I'll answer your response before you post it !
I wasn't being Racist by asking you if you would like me to produce
some HIP HOP Tracks for you, for all I know your the white guy in the picture..besides Eminem is White. I said that because I assumed you were the black guy in the picture, the majority of people I get in my studio are Black, they have money to drop in the studio. Hence, I was asking if you would like to send your wealth my way, as clearly your successful.

So what really is eating Gilbert Grape ???

Did you know if you take the / out of 1%, you might actually have
2 more 00's. Making it that 100 will make it and not 1%, thus showing it
depends on how you look at things as to the matter of your success.
1% - / = 100. Laughing

Over 90% of EVERYTHING is crap...it's a quote from a science fiction writer whose name eludes me. Sadly, it's true.

Does that mean we should stop trying? Stop listening? Stop posting our thoughts? Stop dreaming? Of course not.

At the same time, JS's cold hard facts are hard to refute and foolish to ignore. It's a hard, competitive field with a lower bar of entry than many. Most of us will *not* make good money at this. Sad but true.

I choose to keep plugging, take advice with a grain of salt and filter out what seems true to me... keep learning, keep trying to perfect... and to keep making suggestions to V123 on how to make this a better place for everyone.

I do think we need to leave the personal attacks entirely out of this.

Tyler Jones deserves a Free t-shirt for that post. That’s the most diplomatic Scholarly encouraging subtle reply, which I am pretty sure lifted everyone’s spirit after having read Gilbert Greats’ Post…

Thanks Tyler for making everyone’s day and turning things round and giving us the vision again!

Never Give up your dreams...

Lous,
What part of the obvious racist comments do you think deserves a t-shirt. Regardless of whether I'm black or white, to comment about my needing hip-hop tracks. Please, why not ask me if I want to buy some fried chicken and watermelon too. He even calls me "Gilbert Grape". Why not just use the "N" word and be done with it. Take a fair shot at me if you want. I am trying to be helpful. A person comments back about how most of his income doesn't come from voice-over. He does other things. great, groovey. He's trying to make it. The odds are against him, just as it is against all of us. What about my posts really deserves you guys ganging up on me? Unless perhaps deep down, you really know that you're part of the problem and not part of the solution. It's not all about being sweet and nice on here. Save the fancy emoticons for myspace. Making a career path decision is a very serious thing. I don't consider lightly the consequences my advice or words may have on others. There is enough of an unsubstantiated self-admiration society on here. In case you haven't figured it out, it doesn't always work and I sure as hell don't want in. You want to judge me, then judge me by all of the contributions that people in this industry have made along the way. Odd that the only reaction to my having a photo of me with the great Willy McCovey was to garner an essentially hate letter covered with a cookie and surrounded by a candy crunch.

Give him a t-shirt Louis. He surely deserves one and while you're at it, buy yourself a few on me. You might be fooling them, but you don't fool me.

Actually non. When I read his comments it seemed as if there was something missing so I skipped through the bone of contention…My guess was that you had sent him a private massage and his reply was in reference to your private correspondences. Gilbert Grape is a movie about a miserable fat woman and your not fat but your posting sounded miserable. Hence the “Gilbert Great” head lines in my topic and perhaps grape in other reviews.

Now for the t-shirt! It was recommended because the posting was positive in a sense as it gives hope to those who want to some how make in the voiceover industry and even if they don’t and if they are ambitious enough they can exploit other options such as, wedding, DJ etc and just continuing to peruse their dream even if they don’t become big is the message in that post everyday is a day rejection when one replies to the lead on Voice123.

As for the black and white… I kind of read past it and was looking for context in the message. Besides in this day in age it’s good to be black…When you get on an elevator everyone holds their bag when I get on an elevator everyone one get’s off because they think I have a bomb. After 9-11 everyone was looking at my like I did it and I am not middle eastern. So you see I know what it’s like to be you but I am not you but I feel your pain but look at it from the bright side... or maybe everyone was just getting off on the same floor and I was being paranoid. Who knows, perhaps I was reading into it wrong. All in all your posting was discouraging and not encouraging we try hard every day in the arts and yes every day we try to make it and so when one reads your post it’s like a slap in the face to those who don’t know how to handle such an abrupt insightful message.

I doubt anything negative was directed at you…You can’t take everything personal even David Chappell knows how not to take it personal

I can't believe I waited this long to post this, but..........

In October I wrapped up a local production of "A Few Good Men" where I played the Jack Nicholson character of Lt. Col. Nathan Jessup. The big line I got to deliver that, of course, everyone was waiting to hear?

"YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!!!!!!!!" Foot in mouth

(emoticon added purely for Mr. Gilbert's sake)

And decent money at that. I know Russ from the radio biz and I can tell you that YES it is possible to make more than $5000 a year in voice overs. I am not union.. just a hard working gal who has slowly built my VO business over the last 5-years while holding down a FT job in Radio and/or TV. I'm not going to give away my trade secrets as my competition is out there (the ladies), but I can tell you for 2006 I made more at voiceovers than at my current FT radio gig. I'll be going back to PT soon and eventually leaving the radio world altogether. The man who got me into this business started also in radio and now pulls in over 200K.. and he's NOT union.

Just wanted to get my 2-cents in.

Smile

In defense of my position I should mention that there were a number of inapporpriate posts here. (In my opinion, there still are) In any event, V123 removed the offensive posts, which perhaps makes my rant seem rather superficial. I am sending this post for purposes of clarifying the situation.

Thank You
