I have been on this forum for a few days now and one of the first things that impressed me was the civility of the discussions here. It is much more civil here than 99% of the other boards I terrorize, er, visit.
I am but an engineer here in Hollywood, California who works for a television station owned by a Giant Media Conglomerate. I've been doing TV for almost 38 years now (I started at age 15 -- you do the math). I am not, repeat NOT, VO material by any stretch of the imagination. Uh-uh, no way, no how. I just don't have the pipes for it, so I guess I've fulfilled Requirement #1 of VO work: Know Your Strengths and Limitations.
I do like to think I've learned something in 38 years and that I've become a critical listener/observer. There are people here who hear things I would never think to bring up in a critique, but I'm not deaf, either. At the very least I can help people figure out why they're hearing ESPN radio or whatever in their audio chain
Here is another shameless plug for my mic shootout site, now with 62 different mics:

I had a church call me one Monday saying that they could hear me better on Sunday than they could hear their pastor. Turns out that one of their ground loops in their audio chain had been bumped off, and their entire church wiring had become a huge loop antenna that was perfectly tuned to receive 1450-1500 KHz.
Long story short, I re-grounded their system and eventually got them a new amp and speakers, but the RFI in that space was amazing.
Oh, and I just checked out the site. Very cool. I have an AT 4060 in my studio now. I'm looking for something that captures that sound with better off axis noice reduction. I have to boot the family out of the house, turn off the HVAC and hope the helicopter's not flying to really use all the mic. |
