Paul,
without knowing anything about your microphone, or USB-mic's in general, I wouldn't really know if it would be sufficient for auditions. But, you don't us to tell you anyway - you can find out easily for yourself:

listen to some of the REAL auditions in the "Leads & Reads" forum.

Are you able to make your own auditions sound anything remotely close to those (technically, of course), then you're fine. If you're not, then I wouldn't audition, if I were you.

If you really do want a second opinion, then post one of your auditions here, and we'll be happy to evaluate it, technically aswell as artisticly.

No, you don't need a preamp or a mixer using an USB-mic - that's kinda the idea... but a decent microphone (non-USB) along with a decent interface (could be a USB soundcard with an internal preamp) would pobably do better than your Samson and your RealTek (I asume you meant soundcard and not HD/HardDrive...)
Cost a little more, but it's a small investment, considering you're "competing" (there. I said it. Ouch...) against top-class voice-over artists who have spent thousands of $ in equipment.

The soundcard that came with your computer may be junk. Then again, it might actually be quite acceptable - there really is that much variety in what comes inside the box from the factory.

I have heard some complaints about the Realtek cards and can do nothing other than believe they were well founded for those who complained. My own experience has been quite the opposite.

I used the original equipment Realtek card for over three years - for paid work. I never, ever, not once had any complaints or negative comments from anyone regarding sound quality issues.

In spite of that, I did upgrade to a Focusrite Saffire that connects via firewire. I can hear a slight improvement. Was it worth it? Well, yeah, because I am earning money and any improvement can be justified when it contributes to the success of my business. Was it absolutely necessary? In all honesty, no, not really.

My thinking is that if you are not experiencing any negatives related to your soundcard and you are not at the point where your revenue stream justifies the upgrade, then why spend the money unless your onboard soundcard is truly a negative that is impeding your ability to get work and earn money.

I am just kind of dipping toes at this point also, but I found that my Realtek card (stock on a dual processor Gateway) was a major drawback. I put in a 24 bit Soundblaster card I got for about 30 bucks at Office Depot - world of difference! I am not using a USB mic though, so can't really comment on that.

Of course top line stuff can't hurt sound quality, but we have got to start somewhere.

Good luck!
