Hi!
I've assembled my commercial demo based on suggestions from GREAT VOICE .COM'S $95.00 demo assessment. Should I be angry at the money I spent? Or did these people at Susan Berkley's Grerat Voice.Com make sound suggestions? I look forward to your comments. Unfortunately I don't have another $95.00 to spend.
Hail

Hail,
I can't comment on how the service you paid for may or may not have improved your demo... to do that we'd need to hear what your demo sounded like before.
But I can tell you that I really like the unique, friendly quality of your voice. You're not trying to do a bunch of different styles...it just is what it is... and it's great.
The sound quality sounded a little lackluster... like maybe it's at a lower bitrate, but I'm no tech guy, just guessing.
I wish you all the best!

Hey bud!!
First of all, it's hard to know if this is an improvement from what you had before since I didn't get to hear what you had before....which I believe is the question you asked me. (correct me if I'm wrong)
The problem with asking a question like this is, no one has any way of knowing what Susan's people had to work with. All we have to judge is the finished product. Were the elements recorded first, then you had Susan's people assemble the elements????
So, here's the thing. Since I can't comment if this is an improvement from what you had (which it might well be!), I can comment on what you have here. I will qualify that my critiques are in no way a critique of Susan's work, since again I have no way of knowing what she had to work with. Also keep in mind that if you ask 20 different people to critique your demo, you'll get 20 different opinions.
That said, here's mine.
You have an interesting style. I like it. Sort of an everyman, quirky, nebbish delivery that reminds me of Lorenzo Music.
I think the spots are too long. I wanted to hit the fast forward button throughout the demo. Also, it sounds like a demo. Everything sounds like the same mic, same music library, same mic level, same room/studio, etc. Your demo is competing with those of us whose demos consist of real spots. Real spots that were recorded with different mics, in different studios, with different mixers, etc. This adds variety to the mix. This variety is also reflected in the actor, and gives the illusion of versatility. Every demo needs this variety, even if the demo is made from fake spots created just for the demo.
Now, to your comment that you don't have another $95 to spend on your demo, well, that's pretty unrealistic. You are going to be spending a helluva lot more than $95 when pursuing a VO career. Even if you had a top notch demo, there's a lot of money to be spent if you want to be in the game. If you don't have the bucks right now, no worries. Save up! The business will always be here. Listen, most of the people I know making a solid living in show biz had 2-3 day jobs, as well as night jobs, as they saved up to pursue their career. Unless you are born into money, everyone has to pay their dues. There are no short cuts. I wish there were.
