Just checking in to say hi to everyone. Hope you're enjoying the holidays. I joined recently and am still getting the lay of the land--I'll be checking out the forum every now and then.

I'm actually an Air Force trained meteorologist and happened to find a job back home doing radio forecasts. I had no broadcasting experience whatsoever and before I knew it, I was on the radio in Boston, New York City, Philly and other major markets. So I got the hang of talking into a microphone and figured I'd apply that to some voiceover work. I'm still a newbie to the VO biz so I'll be keeping an eye out for any tips out there.

I've been listening to a lot of other demos from all of you and I've got to say you all sound fantastic! It'll be nice to get to know some of you.

Happy New Year!

Hey Cameron,

I had a buddy in Ohio who became an Air Force meteorologist... Wonderful that you can parley that talent to leverage into voice-overs.

There are quite a number of helpful people here (and plenty more who will give you advice Wink).

Happy New Year,
Joe J Thomas

Thanks guys. I'm used to the equipment at work but have recently built a small studio in the basement--so I'm still in the process of fine tuning sound. I bought an MXL condenser mic this year but it needs phantom power through the Mackie board...this is producing a lot of noise which sounds horrible after Noise Reduction (Cool Edit). I'm a drummer too so I just tested out a couple of drum mics (CAD) and they actually sound much better since they don't require phantom power. I tested the snare drum mic and a bass drum mic. With a little fiddling of the levels, they actually sound better than the MXL--weird. My wife narrowed down which ones sounded better--I may post the clip here to see what others may think too.

Holy smokes, I'm right next door in Amherst! I liked your demos...the SIAA spot sounds very familiar. Good to hear another weather broadcaster too! I was doing the afternoon weather on WZID for the past few years.

Thanks for checking in! Maybe I'll see around the Oval!

Cheers,
Cameron

Ah, Florida. Yeah, lightning studies...it's got a funny name...brontology! The first time I heard it I thought it was something to do with dinosaurs, but it's actually the study of lightning. I've never done any TV...never want to either.
