I'm ready for the jump. I will go ISDN in 2008.

(I know, I know...technological advances and ISpeak and so on and so on. But studios will long remain outfitted for it, so I shall too.)

Any suggestions? Any for sale? Any good links?

And please keep it simple. The only things I know about it so far is that it's expensive, I've had to rent studio space thrice in four months to secure it, and that it's an acronym for some pretty long words, which probably include Inter-something..

I have a Telos Zephyr 9202 "black face" ISDN codec for sale for $2000. I had it completely rebuilt by Telos and is guaranteed to function perfectly. This machine is very reliable and will probably work longer than the TelCo will continue to supply ISDN service!
There are pictures at the bottom of this page:
http://web.mac.com/eldorec/iWeb/Site/TO%20SELL.html

This unit has been a standard in broadcast for over 10 years, and doesn't seem to be fading out just yet.

I am a professional studio installer based in LA that specializes in VO studios, and would be happy to be of service. I often provide remote support for clients outside the LA area by phone, IM, remote desktop control, whatever means necessary! Drop me line...

Low cost.

The Zephyr while expensive would provide a simpler solution. Plug in the audio, plug in the ISDN line and go.

Hey Robert...

I used a comrex nexus...and Sennheiser 421 for years. Easy to set up, and even my picky FM PD...approved of the sound for on-air broadcast from home! About 2000 for the Nexus.

Good Luck

What codec were you using with the Nexus? I don't believe it does MPEG L2 Mono 128, the primary VO industry standard.

Hey Robert,

I have a Telos Zephyr Xstream that I found on eBay. Knock on wood - it's never failed me yet. It's great. You do need to be careful on eBay though... when I was looking at them on there, there were a number of fraudulent ads with units for sale. I called the seller of this unit a couple of times to verify things, etc. I can't recall what I paid, but I think it was around $2500.

One benefit that I learned about the XStream is that it doesn't have an internal fan like the other Zephyrs... so it's quiet. Depending on how your studio is set up, that could be helpful. Mine's right next to me.

I pay $60/mo, and the set up was $200... but since I signed a two year contract, it was free. I never dial out so there generally aren't any per minute charges.

Just have a look at this site.

A product called source-connect.

It's amazing and catching on FAST!

19,000 people connected to date.

WAY cheaper than ISDN hardware... plus, in real time, a remote studio can take control of your machine and play you their video or .wav

Yes Thomas, I am... I have had the trial version up until recently and am awaiting my dongle from Ilok.

I should be back online in a few days.

I have been very impressed with the setup so far.

Do you use it too?

No, I don't - but would be interested in doing some tests.
I'll be checking the demo version,

Thomas

As soon as I get up and running again I will send you my unique addy and I would gladly do tests with you if you like.

Also... most of the smaller groups on the ring will help out too.

Great! Have you been ordering the pro version with apt-x?
Since I'm working with APTX and Mayah, I would like to do some tests in mixing hardware/software studios. So far I was never successful in linking up with VO using software versions...

Since you're waiting for your iLok donge, how could you install the demo version?

Thomas

No Thomas, I have ordered the source connect for $395... not the pro version. I know little of APTX.

It's merely a connection I seek, as I have no interest in being the master machine.

Dongle? What dongle? Just kidding. Some things should be left unsaid on a public forum hehe.
