Ahh... so then I suppose you also read the script right off the screen as opposed to printing them as well?

Actually I either read hard copy from my stand or use a touchscreen interface which allows me to control my DAW remotely and read the copy.
That said, I long ago embraced my inner Dilbert
As for why I record into a computer. I don't. I track into my preamp, which goes to my AD/DA and is then recorded by my DAW. Why? Because I eventually got to a point where I do production, and while mixing and mastering clips, I found it handy to be able to record talent using different equipment. So if I want a deeper tone (such as for a trailer I'll be doing later this week) there's a preamp I know that works well with my voice for that purpose. If I'm doing something else, there are other preamps I prefer. Same with compressors and EQ (do it ITB if you like, but I've always preferred working outside the box, and frankly the tech for ITB processing isn't quite there IME yet).
How do I worry about fan noise? Well for some of the rooms here, I have an separate control room which houses the computers in an isolated rack (please refer back to "embracing my inner Dilbert"). For the room I'm working on now (an audition and project room specifically for me), I simply build a computer using passive components which is non-detectable by human ears from a distance of 3-5 feet. Within the booth, it's non-existant.
(Because I know Jacob will ask... for the trailer I'm using a Horch RM2J -> 610 with telefunken smooth plate ribbed tubes -> Trakker -> HEDD; just borrowing the HEDD for testing, will be testing an Aurora and HEDD next month for use in this room) |
