John,
Dunno how old your son is, and these may not be appropriate for him, but some of my favs by him are "The Fisher King", "The World According to Garp", "Dead Poets Society", "Hook", "Mrs. Doubtfire", "The Birdcage", "Patch Adams" and "One Hour Photo" (very Hitchcock-like).
Speaking of comedians in straight roles, another WONDERFUL movie is "The Majestic" with Jim Carrey, Martin Landau, and Hal Holbrook, and also Carrey in "The Truman Show". _________________ Scott R. Pollak

I like lots of different movies and my interests.... my wife sometimes just can't understand it. She is always amazed that I watch a lot of stuff she would never get and tune it out.
A really great movie my family saw lately was "National Treasure 2." Pretty intense flick and very well done. My daughter is a big Nicolas Cage / Johnny Depp fan. So any of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies we enjoy also.
I tend to like the strange. Some of the older ones like "The Fight Club" and "Vanilla Sky" really intrigued me. I tend to lean toward more of the sci-fi stuff though more than anything. Anything "Star Wars" or "Star Trek". "Bladerunner" was one of my all-time favs that was not one of the on-going epics.
I even liked "The Notebook" Another cryfest flick was "A Walk To Remember." Really good flick.
But my all-time favorite.... "Planes, Trains and Automobiles."
Is that too many???? |

In no particular order (bolded ones are a little less known):
Elf, Best in Show, Raising Arizona, Zoolander, Napoleon Dynamite, Lost in Translation, Paradise Now, Keeping the Faith, Fight Club, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Breakfast at Tiffany's (and all Audrey Hepburn movies...except My Fair Lady - good but not an Audrey classic), Ocean's 11 and 13, Coming to America, Playing by Heart, Salaam Bombay, IQ, 28 Grams
Clearly, this is in no particular order, haha! |

Have to agree with Crash as one of the all around best movies I have ever watched. It will leave you with your jaw on the floor and thinking, thinking, thinking.......
I just rented a Showtime series I had heard good things about
Dexter. This show is NOT for the squeamish!! However, if you liked the style and writing in the series Six Feet Under; you will probably like Dexter. I watched the whole first season in two nights!! I am hooked and can not wait for season two (which just ended) to come out on DVD!
I have to agree with Anthony on Dream Girls. I liked it a lot more than I expected. I was also skeptical about Hairspray, but I loved it! You can't compare it to the stage productions or the original. It is just plain old dance in your seat, feel good, fun movie! However, they should have given the roll of Mrs. Turnblatt to Harvey Firestien, not Travolta..... _________________ Heather

I've been able to catch up on movies lately. One of the most noteable that I've come across has been....
...The Departed.
Leonardo reminded me how great an actor he is (ever since his Gilbert Grape acting). But this movie overall was just top notch riveting.
Cheers,

Well...as far as newer releases are concerned:
La Vie En Rose
Not a great film, a good one, but featuring a fantastic performance by Marion Cotillard as France's "Little Sparrow" - Edith Piaf -
Yes, it's in French with subtitles, but so very worth it.
And, eventhough these awards seem to mean less and less with every passing year - she may become only the second woman to win the Academy Award for a Foreign Language Film-
If she doesn't, then it very well may be Julie Christie, who is gorgeous and understated and clear and just wonderful in Away From Her - which features another really marvelous performance from a Canadian actor - Gordon Pinsent, I believe-
I don't see much, but I did see these two recently and next on my list is Viggo Mortenson inEastern Promises-
All the best-

Can NOT believe I forgot this one: "Big Fish". Absolutely in my top 5 favorites. "K-Pax", too. _________________ Scott R. Pollak

Roger - always wanted to see the notebook.
Also, can't remember who else said it, but Good Will Hunting is SUCH a great movie. Amongst my all-time favourites. |

Hi, I'm new to the board but here it goes.
Faves for recent releases include: Juno, There Will Be Blood (Daniel Day Lewis is awesome), and Sweeney Todd (Sondheim is amazing)
Then there's
The Godfather I & II, Goodfellas, The Goodbye Girl, Love Actually, Stripes, (any old Paul Newman movie) I'm sure there are more but that's all that I can think of at the moment. |

These aren't exactly new movies, but they're the kind that if I'm channel surfing and I stumble upon them, I find myself putting down the remote and just watching (for the umpteenth time):
All The President's Men
Amistad
and a fairly obscure 1964 film called Fate is the Hunter. _________________ For more voice over demos, my life story, and other foolishness, please visit my website at www.leegordonproductions.com |
