I have wanting to chime in with a couple of my favorites. My wife and I rented "Reign Over Me" with Adam Sandler. It is the most amazing role I have ever seen him in.
"Sling Blade" is a well written and acted movie by Billy Bob Thorton..hmmmmm
"The Waitress" was a cute chick flick that I was glad that we rented.
My alltime favorite would have to be" Oh Brother Where Art Thou" Sooooo funny. _________________ Scott Paxton

Scott, based on several recommendations from this thread I've added "The Waitress" to my Netflix queue. We're in agreement on "O Brother...", too. GREAT soundtrack, btw.
Just saw a rental that my wife and I both enjoyed tremendously, "The Island". If you enjoy Michael Bay films, such as Transformers, Armageddon, and the Hitcher, then you'd like this. I didn't know WHAT to expect and it turned into a rollicking fun roller-coaster ride. Sort of a blend of Transformers, The Matrix, and Mad Max all in one. _________________ Scott R. Pollak Warm. One of my friends had a small part in a Michael Bay film (Holy Man) and at some point during the production he told Bay to "go f--- himself." I think he was pleasantly surprised to not only not be fired but not find his role relegated to the cutting room floor. _________________ For more voice over demos, my life story, and other foolishness, please visit my website at www.leegordonproductions.com

I love LA. And I love this Steve Martin film -- this is a favorite clip from LA Story. He is such a wonderful actor, and quite a cinematic poet and romantic.

Of course, he's also a very funny man (though not a very convincing Italian) -- here's a clip from another favorite -- MY BLUE HEAVEN.

Now here's some good New York Italians for ya, gone South. One of my favorite clips from MY COUSIN VINNIE. Marisa Tomei -- love her in this.

You know, when we've been treated so rudely by so many, we need a guy like this on our side -- to be rude to others! Now, isn't that what show biz is all about?
Here's a clip from FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION -- I love the improv quality in these mockumentaries by Christopher Guest.

Greta thread idea Scott...I rarely watch a movie twice...but my husband and I watch 310 to Yuma last night even though we saw it at the theatre....loved it!!! There is so much layering to the characters they really are interesting to watch...it's not just a 'good guy' vs a 'bad guy'. A new classic... _________________ Marilyn Taylor

While browsing through my DVD collection, I picked this one up tonight that I had all but forgotten. I had the incredible experience of working with Joan Allen when I was a Theater grad student at Northern Illinois University. This is one of my favorite films that she did, Pleasantville with Tobey Maguire, Jeff Daniels and Reese Witherspoon:

I don't think anyone mentioned these films so I will:
The Lives of Others - a stunning performance by Ulrich Mühe who passed away later in the year. What a loss.
Little Children - a disturbing but excellent film.
Superbad - just plain funny.
American Gangster - Denzel at his best
Ratatouille - I can't help it, as a voice guy, I'm a sucker for animated films.
Enchanted - Yep, I just love them corny movies.
Stardust - much better than I thought it would be. I loved Deniro in this
Meet the Robinsons - You know . . .
28 Weeks Later - Scared the crap outta me
Disturbia - Shia LeBeouf is an up and comer.
Blades of Glory - you gotta admit, these guys are funny
300 - WOW!
I Am Legend - I literally bawled in the theater when he had to kill his dog
Shoot 'em up - big fun!
The Astronaut Farmer - Heart-warming
The latest "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Harry Potter" movies - I just love em
The Brave One - Jodie foster in vigilante heaven
Alpha Dog - even scarier because it's true!

I'm a die-hard movie buff and last night, I was having one of those "I can't sleep moments". So I put on IFC.. (Independent Film Channel) I watched a documentary called "THE BRIDGE". The creator interviewed family & friends of people who committed suicide by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. It also included actual footage of individuals doing so. Sounds gruesome, and it was, but I found myself glued to this.
It was sad to learn that The Golden Gate Bridge is the #1 choice of suicide by bridge in the world. The walk way isn't protected by a high fence, so it's easy for somone to climb over and fall to their death. In 2004 alone, 24 people lost their lives by committing suicide this way.
The Bridge was an eery piece, and very sad to watch. But it makes me wonder why no one puts up a high fence to prevent these tragedies from happening again.

somebody please stop me!
Okay, I'll stop ya, Joe. Let me preface this by saying taste in any form of art, be it cinema, music, paintings, etc. is purely personal and subjective and so there is NO 'right or wrong'. I'm in agreement with you on some of these, and not on others.
"Ratatouille" was a work of art, IMHO. I saw it in the theater two weeks in a row. And I'm a tightwad, so you KNOW I loved it to drop that kind of dough. I was utterly blown away by Peter O'Toole's voicing of Anton Ego, the critic! A voice - AND delivery - to DIE for!
Haven't yet seen "28 weeks Later" but saw the first one "28 Days Later" which was really good. Also, if you haven't seen it, get the JAPANESE VERSION of "Dark Water", NOT the remade U.S. version. The dubbed Japanese version is REALLY CREEPY! Very Hitchcock-ian.
"Blades of Glory" had its moments, but I liked "Dodgeball" better. I like a bit more esoteric comedies like "Waiting for Guffman" and "Happy Texas". LOVED Will Ferrall, though, in "Stranger than Fiction"!
Just watched "300" for the first time this weekend and absolutely, utterly HATED IT. I've never been more bored by a movie in my entire life. What was the plot? Repeated scenes of an outnumbered group of misfits slaughtering vastly larger armies. On the other hand I LOVED "Beowulf"!
Loved... LOVED... "I am Legend"! To a very minor degree it reminded me of "28 days Later".
Really wanted to like the "Astronaut Farmer" but simply could NOT get past the utterly impossible premise. C'mon, building not ONE but TWO rockets in your barn???

Allison - I am adding this to my Netflix cue as soon as I hit the 'submit' button here. There is NOTHING I love more than a great documentary.
Speaking of which, if you haven't seen the British series that has been running for about 50 years now, the "Seven Up" series, it is a MUST rent! In about 1963 or so, they began documenting a group of vastly diverse British kids at age 7, then came back every 7 years to see what had become of them. They're still making the films to this day, as most of these 'kids' are now in their 50's. It is an AMAZING journey... just amazing!! _________________ Scott R. Pollak Warm. Real.
