|
|
Okay, here's the idea: My wife and I LOVE to curl up with a good DVD. I'd love to see forum visitors post short reviews, recommendations, picks or pans here of recently viewed or released movies. I know that probably 90% of the movies I rent are based on recommendations by friends.
We'd need to keep this going so the thread stays somewhat near the top.
I'll get 'er going:
- Beowulf: LOVED IT! Incredible computer graphics (CG). Never read the book, but I've heard that if you did read it, the movie disappoints. I'd go back and see it in a heartbeat. Not recommended for the very young as there are some very intense scenes and a moderate amount of violence. People who enjoyed LOTR would like this.
- Sweeney Todd: Hated it. Beautiful set designs and lighting, but forgettable music and lyrics and excessive, gratuitous gore. Definitely NOT for the squeamish or young kids. Sorry, I'm just not into gore.
- Babel: We watched this on DVD last night and really enjoyed it. It's VERY intense, with a modest amount of violence and some totally unnecessary nudity and sexual innuendo. Not for young children. But a real edge-of-the-seat thriller that ties together several disparate story lines at the end. Reminded me a lot of "Crash", another of my faves. _________________ Scott R. Pollak

| "No Country For Old Men" is hands down, the best movie of 2007. |

One of the best "music" films I've ever seen: ONCE, just released on DVD. _________________ Diane

Oh, yes, yes, passionate -- very moving. I bought all the Frames albums after seeing it in the theater. Incredibly simple, but intense film. Human. LOVED it. _________________ Diane

oooooooooh, good topic, Scott ...
lets see... my son and i do a dinner & movie thing as often as we can.. this year we saw 'American Gangster' w/ Denzel Washington and Russel Crowe.. the kid liked it... to me, it was Denzel being Denzel as a gangster.. all actor, no acting.. imo....
for cheap fun my sweetie and i saw 'Nancy Drew'.. hehehe .. it was fun... but the best movie we went to see was "La Vie En Rose" (Life In Pink).. a terrific biopic of Edith Piaf.. i cried.....
and we kicked back w/ the recent DVD release of 'The Rocket'.. a canadian produced biopic of Montreal Canadiens legend Maurice 'Rocket' Richard.. if you love hockey, you'll love 'The Rocket'...
for christmas i got the DVD collector edition of 1950's 'Sunset Boulevard' w/ Gloria Swanson: "You see, this is my life! It always will be! Nothing else! Just us, the cameras, and those wonderful people out there in the dark!... All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up".. Its a must have for your classic flick collection _________________ "the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except those that sang best." |

A wonderful film. I don't think there was a false moment in the entire film. My wife didn't like it as much as I did, but, even with the violecne, she thought it was a good film. Cohen Brothers strike again. _________________ Scott F.

"Pan's Labyrinth" was one of the best movies I saw this year. "Waitress" is a cute, quirky comedy. If you've never seen it, go rent (or I will send you my copy; it's THAT good!) the TV series "Firefly" and the follow-up movies, "Serenity" is hands-down the best TV and.or movie that I have ever seen. _________________ Life is short but sweet, for certain

Pan's Laybrinth was not the movie I expected. It was so much better that what I had in mind.
My wife and I just saw WAITRESS just before Christmas. As a result, we gave DVD's to a couple of our friends for Christmas. A reall winner. _________________ Scott F.

Wow, what a great start! I already have "Once" in my Netflix queue, but added "No Country for Old Men", "Pan's Labyrinth", and "Waitress". Sadly, it appears the writer, director and co-star of "Waitress" was murdered just before the film opened at the Sundance Festival. _________________ Scott R. Pollak

That's true. On the disc there are several tributes to her by the cast. _________________ Scott F.

And "Firefly", Scott? Where is that in the queue??
and it's very sad about Adrienne Shelley, but I'm so glad that they found the guy!
Also, must recommend "Love Actually"!! _________________ Life is short but sweet, for certain

Not sure if this counts, but I got the boxset of the "Road To..." movies with Bing Crosby and Bob Hope for Christmas and forgot what fun movies they were. Always worth a rewatch for the charm and witty back-and-forth.
Also, I'm with Anthony, Transformers was one of the best movies that came out this year. All my senses were assaulted at 100db for two solid hours and I loved every minute of it. |

Agreed. Transformers was GREAT fun. We have the movie and the soundtrack. We got a lot of very fun boxed sets for Christmas:
- A season of "Arrested Development"
- A season of 'Scrubs'
- the one and only season of "The Comeback" with Lisa Kudrow
- Boxed set of "Storm Stories" from my wife who works for the Weather Channel _________________ Scott R. Pollak
