For those who have a website other than at V123 (which I hope everyone does!), do you check to see where your hits are coming from?
I've had hits from all over the world, including Norway, the UK, Belgium, New Zealand, Australia, Taiwan, and even from a country in Eastern Europe! I have no way of contacting them, but it makes me very curious as to how they knew to google me specifically. Some find me via keywords, others come through a radio station website that lets me have a link to my website.
I'm still dazzled by the world-wideness of the web!
Do you have any stories on this topic?

Hey Karen:

I use (what used to be) Google stats - now:

http://www.robotstats.com/en/

And through very detailed information, I'm at least able to track the results of advertising or marketing that I've done. And even the people who use a web search.

Several months ago I noticed that I had a visitor from Dominican Republic and thought to myself "that will never turn into a gig"...

Oddly a month later, I was doing the English version of a presentation for Media Tracker - the media monitoring service of South America. (¡Era agradecido hablar un poco Español!)

I wonder how many request V123 get each month. That would be nice to know.

Does any one know what a respectable number would be for and individual and for a site like V123

This lets me see where visitors are from, pertinent info etc. Then, I save this info and add them to my email list for my PR people to send info to them. Of course, the emails can always be opted out of and my email sending company makes sure everyone knows that so it is not spam. You should have something like this on your sites so you can keep the info. If they care enough to say hello, they have an interest in you and what you do.

In the 1990s when several investors approached me about my business and my audio book production facility, I found out that investors and banks and the like (when money is involved) believe that a business (a website) is of interest, a growing concern perhaps worth investing in, when the site receives at least 50,000 hits per month. Wow. And the "big guys" receive triple and quadruple that a week!

I average about 15,000 hits per month and yes, they are from everywhere! The vast majority US but there's hits from Egypt, Mexico, Trinidad and Tabago, Austria, all over the place. Got a hit from Turkey last month and I'm now the official voice of the number one radio station in Istanbul (take if for what you will Wink ) I've also recorded for places like Sierra Leone, Iraq, of course the UK. I have a nice program built into my site that shows me how they got there and if they surfed in from a search site, they keywords they used. It shows me the page they entered on and the one they exited on too.

Just because someone surfs onto your site does not give you right to spam them. If they are actually "saying hello" (signing a guest book, or clicking to receive a newsletter) that would be different. If someone asks for you to contact them or you've had a previous business relationship...email away!

Just because you give someone the right to "opt out" does not mean your unsolicited email is not spam.

Unsolicited email is spam, my friends. Don't use it in any of it's insidious forms.

Bettye's subject line reads that she has a registration form on her personal website, so I'm guessing the people that register kind of expect to get messages from her...

I don't yet have anything like that, just a counter that I can use to check my stats - where people are coming from, how they got there, how many pages they viewed, how long they stayed, etc.

If anyone (like September) is getting lots of traffic, would you mind sharing how you make this happen?

Thanks!

Karen,

well, a few things. When I signed up over at TOS, they did a press release for me and that really helped. The company who did my website did an AMAZING job at meta-tagging it. I'm an active member of a number of message boards and I make sure my website is always in my sig file. I do a good bit of link exchange with male talents and I also will do low-cost intros and outros for smaller internet radio stations and podcasters in exchange for some commercial time on their shows and for a banner on their site. If it's a popular show like "NightWatch with Todd Sheets", I make sure to visit the chat rooms during showtimes and talk with listeners, a lot of which are small business owners who hire me to do company voicemail. I am the most used female talent in Second Life at the moment. If you visit a club on SL, you'll likely here my voice. The pay isn't that great right now, but more and bigger corporations are joining every day and when they do, they hear my voice all over the place. My business cards all have my website address on them. I'm just always in a constant marketing state of mind and kind of make it a game for myself Smile

My bad. I didn't see that in her "subject line". Apologies, Bettye.

My URL of course is on all correspondence, cards, etc. I also take banners on various vo websites. I give door prizes in my area at advertising related events. I give seminars all over the U.S. at which I offer incentives when people visit my site. The search engines are doing fairly well at calling up my site but it's been up for some nine years now. I maintain my site consistently. By the way, I never have had a builder. I built it myself and maintain it myself. I also have a second website www.yourphonevalet.com which is only two years old. Hope this helps. Hey Autumn...what is that program of yours that tells you where they surfed from etc?
