Hello! After 25 years doing voice work, I stopped when my child became a toddler. It was too distracting for the office workers in the agencies to have to play with her while I was in the booth! Now that she's in middle school, that's no longer a problem. I have my own studio here at home. Two mics, a mixing board and firewire to the laptop with Nero and Audacity.
What I need to know now is everything I can find out about getting a phone patch. (I don't need ISDN just yet.) The phone patch will of course, allow clients to direct me better than not having the phone patch. The other benefit, and my main reason for wanting one is to be able to easily co-host or be a regular correspondant on radio and not be trapped inside a telephone - where I can't hear well and don't sound particularly good, either.
Thanking you in advance for all the information.

Hi Phyllis
That's Easy!
Just go over to www.skype.com and download their service. It's only $14.95 and you get:
A full year of unlimited calls to any phone in the US and Canada - right from your computer.
More than an hour of international calls before you have to buy more credit.
Over $50 in coupons to get a Motorola headset, Netgear WiFi phone, and a Polycom speakerphone.
And for an extra $30 you can get your own Phone Number to use just for voice work. So you can call any phone...not just other skype customers!
The Sound is clear...but it will still sound like a phone to the client. But they understand.
Good Luck

Phyllis,
You can't beat the Telos One. The quality is fantastic. Real easy to setup and use. I use one and love it.

Freddie, thank you for this link. There are posts there that relate directly to the information that I am looking for.
Thanks also to those of you who have told me about Skype and Telos. What I am trying to set up is a "hard" phone patch that uses an interface "box." I'd be using my own phone line, that would allow me to use my microphone directly into the phone, and to listen to the replies from the phone through my mixing board. Once I owned the "box," I would make all the calls I wanted as I do now, with my handset phone.
I am hoping that the microphone will produce a better sound out, and the headphones a clearer sound in. My main goal is to be able to guest host radio shows with this set-up in a way that is superior to a regular phone.

Phyllis,
That's what the Telos One does. It's used in numerous radio stations for interviews and on-air phone setups. You talk into your mic instead of a handset and that feeds the Telos. The caller or director is heard through your headphones.

Hi Russ, thanks for the explanation. After a quick search, I found that new ones are around from $550 to $750. That's a pretty big bite for me at this time; are they available and still reliable used? Is there another kind available that does the job too? (That's not to say that I'm not drooling at the idea of the Telos One, wow, it's exactly what I'm looking for!)

Yes! My husband and I were looking at that very same one last night. He knows of an electronics wholesale supply house that he used to buy equipment from and we're hoping they've got it. If not, I'm going to get it at BSW. Thanks for the validation - Nikki spoke of this very same unit too, in fact, it was her link that got me there. (Thanks to Nikki too!)
My mixing board is an Alesis MultiMix 8 Firewire, and from what I can figure out just looking at the JK and my board, I should be able to use my board with no problem. I would imagine and please correct me if I am wrong, that most mixers work with the JK. _________________ Phyllis K. |

XLR in/out to your console. Googled your Alessis and it looks like you've have a "main" and "monitor" out. Either one can go to the JK's "to phone line" XLR then another cable will connect "from phone line" to one of your spare inputs. Plug in the phone line itself and you're good to go. BTW, BSW is very fast getting stuff to you. Back panel of the JK for reference is shown here...

Connie, this is great information, thank you for the link! Why did you choose the Gentner Hybrid over anything else? _________________ Phyllis K. |

Because I knew what it was and saw it posted on a used equipment site for a good price.
I searched audio equipment and came up with this link...

I'm not sure it was this board - it could have been an eBay purchase - but I did buy a nice "new" camera using this board.
