I've liked using short-throw shotguns. The ME64 capsule for the Sennheiser rig can be hard to find, but it's perfect for talking heads and voiceovers: much better than the ME66 for these purposes. I also like the Sennheiser MKH-50 and 40, and I've used the 50 a lot for vo in the field.

Sanken shotguns are excellent, and I've always had great results with Schoeps mics.

I already have some video gear and lavs and wireless - Countryman, etc. The shotgun is just going to be the main boom mic for camera 1. I had also been thinking about a matched pair of Shoepps or the Earthworks for doing Choir style micing which would be going to a dedicated audio rig with timecode - something like a Nagra, but this is coming in via a seperate audio group and I am just responsible for the Mcirophones.

So, tons of food for thought here. I'm trying to bring data in from as many sources as possible. I checked with some local shooters groups and I was somewhat surprised (but not overly) to find out how little thought goes into the audio end of their projects. SUrprised to see people spending 10 -15 hours to edit 1 - 2 minutes of video and yet not wanting to use microphones that cost more than $89 and almost no sound sweetening, etc.

On tyhe other side of the coin, I've spent some time with some real pros who are using gear I couldn't justify buying in a thousand years.

It is nice to know that there is a huge middle ground. I'm going to rent an HVX200 for a week and audition the mics with it to get an idea of what works best and at what price point.

Thanks again for all the good suggestions .
