Hi Everyone,

I do a lot of IVR telephony work... but usually send wav or mp3 files... But one client needs uLaw files. How do I convert them to uLaw? Protools doesnt' do it, as far as I know!
Julie

Adobe Audition will do it.

Hello Julie,

If you don’t have Audition available, try searching on Google for "wave to uLaw", there’s quite a bit of shareware and software trials you can download for that.
Whenever I find a good conversion plug-in, will let you know.

Sound Forge will do it, too.

btw - Ulaws suck. Big, clunky and outdated. Many pbx & key systems still use them, though. When is the telecom world gonna catch up!

Julie,
Hope this isn't too late for you...but NCH makes a good basic product that will do the trick. It's free for the basic version of Switch. You can pay for upgrades, if you need 'em:

Chuck, you WILL agree that they are big, clunky & outdated, right? I designed voice & data systems for years and I could never figure out why teleco doesn't move to mp3. ESI does, and some Toshiba KEY systems. Do you know? Why is that?

I am not sure why they do not move to MP3. I think it is because of the telephony interface cards and the amount of processing power it takes to read them, but I can't be sure. The other reason I can think of is the sound quality. MP3s actually suck pretty bad too. You can make a u-law file sound good with a little work, but mp3 always gets nasty and tinny at those lower bandwiths.

u-law encoding was designed specifically for telephony use. That is the only place they actually sound decent.

Big and clunky? Not compared to 16bit 16Khz PCM. It is all relative, and disk space on big servers is cheap these days.

In telephony, everything is legacy. That could be the other reason, upward compatibility.

You want to hear decent u-law files that I made? Call NJ Food Stamp Info Hotline at 609-943-3155 Those are about the best that you can get.
