I need to purchase a microphone for VO work.
Everyone keeps telling me stay away from USB mics,
but I really liked the Rode Podcaster.
The Heil PR-40 seems to be gaining a lot of popularity in the broadcast world.
How does this mic compare to the Electro-Voice RE-20 and the Rode?

Hi Frank. For the money I'd go with the Rode NT1 over the EV. I've been chastized before in this very forum for downplaying the RE20/27's merits for voiceover work, but I'm sticking to my guns. It's one of the best broadcast mics you'll find - but less than great for straight VO work.

My humble opinoin.

And I've never worked with the Heil, so I honestly can't comment on it, but HAVE worked with the RE-20 (and Shure SM-7) for years. Bought an RE-20, new, about 4 years ago for around $350 and absolutely LOVE it.

And and... for what it's worth... I have no experience with the Heil either, but in a recent webinar here on V123, Rodney Saulsberry said he uses the Blue Snowball USB mic with his portable rig. Said he's used it to record final takes that were actually used in broadcast. I haven't used it myself, but I'd take that endorsement seriously... Wink

If anyone can elaborate on the Snowball, I would appreciate it. I have a friend who's radio show is being picked up for syndication in (right now) 3 different markets - and he wants a VERY simple "road rig". He is technologically-challenged and wants to keep it as simple as possible. I've heard good things about this mic.

Hey Todd,

I know you have a Rode NT1, but do you know about the Rode Podcaster? I think this would be perfect for your friend.

Check out this review by Scott Bourne, he's been very helpful:

This is another review by Mark Jensen from Podsqod, another great guy:

Hope this helps.
